Aimie and Grace.
Grace and Aimie.

If you were lucky enough to see Aimie's presence, then you knew that the pair were inseparable.

Aimie was always there in case Grace did something foolish.
Aimie was always there if Grace was going through a hard time.

For Grace, Aimie was always there.

"Are you here to kill me?"

"No!"

"Oh... are you... oh my god, did you kill-"

"No..."

"You an angel?"

"Something like that."

"Are you from heaven?"

"There is no such thing," she lied.

"Well that will disappoint a number of people... so you're a fairy?"

"Less fragile and irrelevant."

"Well, I can tell... do you do good deeds?"

"Far from it," she had said regretfully, and Grace bit her tongue, before hesitantly replying:

"Are you the devil?"

Aimie opened and shut her mouth.

"Yes."

----------

"Is there just one devil?" Grace asked while Aimie brushed her hair.

"No," Aimie replied.

"You're very serious."

"I don't understand human feeling... I try, but it's something I cannot do."

"Do you still, like, eat and sleep?"

"There is no reason for me to do either of those things."

"But you could?"

"I could."

Aimie set the brush down, outstretching her long, thin, bony arm towards Grace, who took her hand.

"I wish I was your height," Grace remarked. "Five foot two does me no good."

"Neither does six foot three," Aimie replied.

---------

Aimie spent every hour of the day with Grace but didn't have a clear excuse for why.

Maybe she enjoyed Grace's presence.

Maybe she enjoyed being in the human realm.

Maybe she enjoyed the emotions surrounding her.

"Why are you here?" Grace asked. "Why did you come in the first place?"

"I have been watching you for a long time. I came to protect you. You almost died the night before we met."

Grace raised her eyebrow, before breaking into laughter... which then stopped almost immediately at Aimie's bland expression. "Oh, you're not joking?"

"I don't joke. You know that."

"I wish you did... I need to teach you how to be more human."

"No!" Aimie stopped, stepping away from the human. "No no no," she began to panic.

"Why not?"

"I will become weak, and then- no, forget it."

"Well I can't forget it now... but, how would I have died?"
