Two strangers walked up to the house and knocked on the stiff wooden door.

Shortly, a little boy answered. He looked dazed and confused. "Yes?"

The couple frowned at the boy's gaunt appearance. He looked exhausted and wide-eyed. "Hello there. Is your mommy or daddy at home?" the woman answered.

Pip shook his head. "They're both dead. My sister is upstairs, do you want to talk to her?"

The couple gave each other an unsure look. Before they could reply, they were rudely interrupted.

"Who the fuck are you talking to?" came a sharp voice from inside the house.

Pip timidly stepped aside as one of his guardians appeared behind him in the doorway, pulling the boy out of the way. "Who are you? What the hell do you want?"

"We're here to investigate fraudulent claims made by someone in this household."

"You are, are you?"

"Yes. Could you please-"

"Wrong house. Goodbye." the man slammed the door in their faces. His scowl deepened and he punched the door for good measure, hoping it would scare the pair away. "Fucking pieces of shit..."

A retreating Pip was grabbed by the arm.

"What the fuck was that about?"

With wide eyes, Pip just shook his head.

"Fucking idiot." his guardian hissed. "And what did I tell you about using the front door?"

Pip hung his head.

"Don't fucking answer it unless I tell you to!"

Pip nodded.

The man stomped off upstairs and a few moments later, a raging argument broke out between him and Pip's sister.

Not liking what he was hearing, Pip went over to his usual hiding place - the cupboard, and waited there until they stopped fighting. He tried listening in to what they were saying but only caught a few random bits and pieces.

"...stupid whore..."

"...'uckin' asshole... die..."

"...the kid... shit... America..."

America? Why were they talking about America?

A few minutes later, Pip heard someone running up the stairs and he tensed up, not wanting to deal with the adults when they were in a mood like this.

"Where are you, brat?"

Pip's heart skipped a beat.

"BRAT!"

Not wanting to keep him waiting any longer, Pip left the cupboard and padded over to the man dating his sister. He was immediately struck around the face.

"That's for talking to those shitty tax people." the boyfriend hissed.

"S-Sorry sir."

He was struck again.

"And that's for hiding."

"I'm sorry..."

He was backhanded again once more, so hard that the force knocked him over. He wasn't told why he was hit the third time so Pip assumed it was just for being himself.
