Joel watched as the colour drained from Lily's face. Who was on the other end of the phone? Surely it couldn't be Liam? The prison wouldn't let him get in touch with her surely? And he didn't have her number anyway.
Lily stood up and walked out of the room, her phone glued to her ear. If it was Liam she'd have just hung up, wouldn't she?
He knew logically that it couldn't be Lily's twat of an ex, but whoever it was, she was rattled.
He sat and waited for her to return. Five minutes passed, then ten. Whoever it was had a lot to say.
Twenty minutes later Lily walked back into the room. She tossed her phone onto the table and then sat down. Joel waited for her to speak, but she didn't. She was breathing fast, almost hyperventilating. He noticed she was trembling. What on earth had the call been about?
He got up off of his chair and went to sit besides her. He put his arm around her shoulder to comfort her. Finally, she spoke.
"I can't believe it. I just can't believe it."
"What Lily? What's wrong?"
"I don't know what to do."
Lily was worrying him now.
"Lily, come on. Talk to me. You can tell me anything. Is it him? Is it Liam?" She looked at him with wide eyes as if he'd gone mad. Then she shook her head. "Then what? Who was on the phone Lily?"
"It was...it was Mattia."
Joel only knew one Mattia, and that was the Ferrari team principal. Shit, he thought. Had she been dropped from the FDA? If she had then Damon bloody better have been as well. She was far more deserving of it than he was.
"Oh shit. Lily, it's not the end of the world. You have all season to earn a new contract. You were amazing last season. That must count for something. Even without their backing there will be teams that want you."
Lily began to laugh almost hysterically. She shook her head.
"Joel, the FDA haven't dropped me." Joel was confused.
"So why are you so upset?"
"I...I've been offered a drive," she began. "Ferrari want me to replace Seb."

Seb sang cheerfully as he loaded the dishwasher up with their breakfast and lunch things. That damn song, he thought. Since Texas he'd found himself with it stuck in his head multiple times. He blamed Daniel and Lily.
"Just a dirt road with trash on each side
But I was Mario Andretti
When daddy let me
Drive!"
He shut the dishwasher and set it going before heading to the cupboard and pulling out a bag of salted popcorn. He was feeling peckish even though lunch had only been a couple of hours earlier. He guessed losing to Fabian five times in a row was hungry work.
He opened the bag and plunged his fingers in. Then his phone rang.
He pulled his hand out and dropped the bag onto the countertop.
He pulled his phone out of his pocket and looked at the screen. It was Mattia. Maybe they had a date when he could go back to Maranello for some sim work. He accepted the call eagerly.
"Hey Mattia. How are you?"
"I'm very well Sebastian. Listen, are you ok to talk?"
"Sure, let me just go to my office. We won't be disturbed there."
