DOWNTOWN.
chapter eight | will to win.Today was Saturday. I drove in with Chaewon, who left me early to go do her tune-ups for the race. I was by myself, especially since today was a full race. My eyes searched for the racer I'd been expecting, but weirdly, he was nowhere to be found. "Looking for Haechan?"
I turned to the slightly masculine voice, seeing someone I haven't met before. He stuck out his hand like most of them do, waiting for reciprocation. "Huang Renjun."
I swallowed my words, introducing myself. "Liu Jiayi."
"Nice hair," He complimented, letting go of me. "I assume you're looking for Haechan, so I'm here to tell you that he's not coming today."
Odd. He doesn't seem like the type to miss a single race. "Why?"
"Not my place to tell you," Renjun shrugged. "I would, but I think Haechan would kill me for spreading his business."
"No, he wouldn't, Renjun. Don't scare the girl," Yuta put his arm around Renjun, who rolled his eyes and slightly smiled. They seemed like good friends. "Haechan's sick. Caught the flu a night or two ago, and has been bedridden since. Although he looks powerful on the road, when he's hit with a sickness, he's like a puppy. Needs a lot of care."
"What a puppy," Taeyong scoffed. "Sorry, Jiayi. Wish we could talk more, but I've got to go take care of someone. I'll see you later."
That must've been the reason Taeyong left on Thursday. Haechan was sick.
Hah. That's kind of cute–his teammates call him a puppy when he's caught the flu. Maybe I should tell him that the next time I see him. "Anyway, Jiayi, I'm free to drive you around tonight," Yuta winked, giving me the offer. I looked over and saw Sakura waiting by her black Corvette. Right–I was Sakura's shotgun today so that I could know what it's like. Yuta must've noticed my silence and looked in her direction. "Ah, I see the Luminaries got to you first. Well, that's alright. Maybe another time."
"Sorry, Yuta," He shook his head, waving it off. "It was nice to see you both, and nice to meet you, Renjun."
"You too, Jiayi. I hope we talk more next time," His eyes crinkled as he waved, the two walking away together. I took a walk toward Sakura, who smiled charmingly and handed me her spare helmet.
