A long chapter ahead 💕
Kashvi
I was genuinely happy today.
After what felt like forever, Mom had made my favourite masala dosa and, it tasted better than it ever had before.
Maybe because my exams were finally over.
I was halfway through my third dosa when, from the corner of my eye, I caught Sameer trying to steal a piece.
I smacked his hand lightly.
“Don’t you dare.”
He pouted, mumbling something under his breath, but I ignored him.
“Kashvi, coordinate with Rahul and handle the décor,” Mom said, and I nodded.
“I’ll go with Sam to get the pooja items. Advika and your dad will manage the invitations.”
Work was being distributed smoothly, and I didn’t mind at all, because Rahul was here.
We hadn’t really spoken properly in days, between Bua Daadi’s constant presence and my exams, things had just drifted and I had missed him.
He wasn’t just family. He was comfort.
Soon, everyone left, and the house quieted down and the reason-
Any guesses?
Bua Daadi.
Thankfully, she was asleep.
“No, bhaiya, those lights go at the entrance,” I called out, trying to sound more confident than I felt.
Managing the entire decoration of a house this big was overwhelming. Back home, things were simpler.
Here, every corner demanded attention and every mistake felt like it would be noticed.
Especially by her.
“Why are you moving that pillar?” I rushed to the other side, my voice sharper this time.
By the time I finally sat down, I could feel the stress settling into my shoulders.
A hand landed gently on one of them.
“Take a break, buttercup.”
I looked up.
Rahul.
I smiled despite myself.
“Now that you’re here, I’ll sit and supervise. You handle everything.”
He gave me that look, the one that said lazy but didn’t argue.
I walked into the kitchen to make coffee for him.
“I’ll do it,” Neena offered.
I nodded, leaning against the doorway.
Rahul stood near a large photograph of Mom and Dad on the wall. He looked at it for a moment then smiled faintly.
“Who knows, Kashvi?” he said casually, almost too casually.
“This could be your future.”
My fingers stilled.
Future? Like them?
I lowered my gaze.
Danish and I didn’t even have something as simple as a picture together, apart from the wedding photos that neither of us chose.
Eight months.
That’s all we had left, according to his one year commitment.
There was no future to imagine when there wasn’t even a present to hold onto.
