Kashvi-
I stared at my reflection quietly.
Yellow.
I looked soft, the attire traditional.
My hands were adorned with delicate flower jewelry, tiny white and yellow petals wrapped around my wrists, fingers, and neck.
The plain yellow saree hugged me far more simply than everything else I had worn these past few days, yet somehow today felt heavier.
My braid rested over my shoulder.
My badi maa had personally removed my vermillion.
My mangalsutra.
"This is your wedding," she had said softly. "Look like a bride once again."
And while everyone else found beauty in that sentiment,
I felt strange. Empty.
For one whole year, those two symbols had become a part of me.
A habit.
Now my forehead was bare.
My neck felt light.
Too light.
Only my ring remained.
I swallowed hard, adjusting my pleats again even though they were already perfect.
The doorknob twisted.
I stiffened instantly before turning only to sigh.
"Bhabhi," Sam announced dramatically as he walked in, "you look pretty."
I smiled despite myself.
"Bas pretty?"
He ignored my sarcasm and walked closer.
Before I could even question him, he bent down.
My brows shot up.
"What are you doing?"
"I need to learn all this," he mumbled seriously, carefully fixing the pleats of my saree near my feet. "Future wife ko impress karna hai."
I laughed, "Hmm. And here I thought someone was helping me out of pure kindness."
"Kindness?" He scoffed, standing back up and brushing imaginary dust off his kurta. "Please. Main itna bhi seedha nahi hoon."
But then he really looked at me and his teasing faded.
His brows furrowed.
"Why do you look so different?"
See? I knew it.
I exhaled softly.
"I look like a bride."
He shook his head immediately.
"No," he said, unexpectedly serious.
"You look like an unmarried woman."
I looked like a girl about to marry the man she loved.
