Kashvi-
“How’s Danish?” she asked again, stepping beside me.
My first instinct was to ignore her but I didn’t want to create a scene, not here, not today. Not when it was about Deepti, about my family.
“He’s good. Busy with work,” I replied shortly, turning back to the sarees.
That should’ve been enough but of course, Alisha wasn’t the kind to stop where she should.
“Of course he’s good, now that I’m back,” she said lightly.
Iss chipkali ka toh mai muh fodd deti.
“Are you sure he’s busy with work only?”
I didn’t respond this time because I knew, this was provocation. Still, something about the way she said it lingered.
“Last I remember,” I said, turning toward her with a faint smile, “he got pissed just by looking at you. So I’m sure you’re contributing to his happiness.”
Her smile faltered.
Good.
Aayi badi mujhe uksaane.
Ree slid in between us like she sensed the tension building.
Saved again.
My attention shifted, finally away from her and that’s when I saw it.
A red saree.
Deep, rich with delicate glasswork catching the light just right.
It wasn’t loud or overdone. It was just perfect.
I nudged Ree lightly, pointing toward it. She immediately nodded, about to call the salesman-
“I like this one.”
Of course. I didn’t even have to turn to know it was her.
“I’m definitely buying it. It’s my brother’s wedding after all,” Alisha added, already taking it in her hands.
Her mother smiled proudly, “You’ll look the prettiest in this.”
“Of course,” my mom agreed casually.
It was gone.
I stared at it for a second longer than I should have.
Not because it was just a saree but because I saw it first.
Petty?
Maybe but still.
As she passed by me, she leaned slightly closer.
“Danish loved red on me,” she said softly, “He used to get me dresses in this color all the time.”
My fingers curled into my palm.
What exactly was she trying to prove?
That he preferred her? That she still mattered? That I didn’t?
Exactly, I’m his wife and she’s his ex.
His wife on papers, Kashvi.
I clenched my jaw. I hated my own mind sometimes.
After that, everything blurred.
There were more sarees and more unnecessary drama. Deepti arguing with Anuj jiju. Families discussing intently.
And me?
I was stuck on a red saree.
No. Not the saree.
