I had agreed to let him leave.

At that time it had seemed reasonable. There was work to be done, people needed him, and I had convinced myself I would be perfectly fine for a few hours.

Rushant bhaiya and Ree kept me occupied after he left.

Or at least they tried to.

As the hours passed, an odd restlessness settled inside me. Every few minutes my gaze drifted toward the clock without meaning to. I caught myself checking my phone more times than I cared to admit.

There was no message.

No call.

Nothing.

The uneasiness only grew.

In the evening, we all gathered for prayer.

The familiar chants echoed through the house, filling the silence that had been bothering me all day. For a little while, my mind finally quieted down. I focused on the prayer, on the warmth of the diya in my hands, on anything except the thoughts constantly circling in my head.

For a few precious minutes, it worked.

"Di, do you know I'm going for placements?" Ree announced proudly.

A smile found its way onto my face.

Right now we were sitting in her room, untangling a hopeless mess of fairy lights spread across the bed.

"That's good, Ree."

She beamed before immediately moving to her next topic.

"Oh, and what are you planning for Diwali?"

I frowned.

"Diwali?"

"Arrey, this week only."

I blinked.

Had it really come that close?

"Singhanias are apparently hosting a huge Diwali party this year. That's what I've heard."

I nodded absentmindedly.

Usually our family celebrated even the smallest festivals with ridiculous enthusiasm.

Diwali was never a small affair.

This year, however, everything felt different.

Between hospital visits, attacks, investigations, and the endless chaos that seemed to follow us around, I hadn't even realized the festival was only days away.

"I don't know," I sighed, trying to separate another stubborn knot in the lights. "I haven't thought about it. There hasn't exactly been time."

My eyes drifted to the clock again, almost instinctively.

It had been hours.

Ree was still talking beside me, but my attention had already wandered.

I wondered where he was, whether he had eaten anything, whether he was safe, whether he'd finally finished whatever had kept him away all day.

The realization hit me unexpectedly.

The room wasn't empty.

The house wasn't quiet.
