THE BATTLE FOR ALEXANDRIA
———WALKING HAND IN HAND through the streets of Alexandria, Kai focused solely on taking one step at a time, paying no attention to the walkers that would occasionally bump his shoulder. He barely even breathed, he felt as if the walkers would see his breath and take a bite from him. The fear pumping through his veins was like something he has ever felt, he's never been this close to death—literally, and he felt like everyone around him could hear his pounding heart. Kai could definitely hear it.
Kai was certain that Carl could hear because Carl the squeezed his hand twice, Kai squeezed it back once. It was their way of communicating, asking with two squeezes "you ok?" and responding "yes" with one squeeze. That was the only thing Kai dared to do, the only out of the ordinary movement he could make because Carl made him feel safe to do so. Every fifteen minutes or so, the two boys would repeat this action. It was partly what kept Kai going, that and the risk of death at any wrong move.
Along the way, Rick had made them all stop somewhere off the side, out of earshot of the walkers and hidden from most. This was where Rick told the group that they couldn't get to the armoury and had to change plans and head to the quarry instead. That is where they'd get the cars to round up the walkers and lead them away, it was a good plan. Nothing good could wrong, just beside everything.
The downside was that Gabriel had to take Judith to his church since they all knew that a baby wouldn't be able to back it to the quarry and back. It was the safest bet to send her to the church, but their was some doubt about if Gabriel would be able to handle such an important job. There wasn't much of a choice now was there?
This allowed the others to continue on their journey, Rick took Sam's hand, the rest of the line was, Jessie, Carl, Kai, Ron and then Michonne. Naturally Ron was very reluctant to take hole of Kai's hand, seeing as he broke his nose, but there wasn't any time for arguing. Wasn't much time for anything.

The sun had already set leaving the group to walk in the dark, Rick lead the way through the herd of walkers and Kai allowed himself to look around more as if the darkness was another layer of protector where the walkers wouldn't notice his head turning.
When his eyes would meet a walker's white and cloudy eyes, he could feel his heart stop beating and would expect it to take hold of him. Grab him in its cold dead fingers and eat every ounce of meat off his bones until he was reduced to nothing but a memory. How terrifying.
Clearly the fear wasn't only getting to him, because it was starting to get to the little boy Sam, who stopped walking all together. His head practically spinning as he looked all around him, walkers covering his view in every direction. I'm doing this his hand slip from Rick's, but still holding on tight to his mothers hand as he took a few fearful steps backwards.
"Sam?" Jessie whispered to her boy, "Sweetheart? Sam? Come on. Come on."
Jessie was trying to persuade him to move, but he stared right through her, his face scrunching up in pain and terror as the walkers walked past them basically breathing down his neck. Rick had gotten in on trying to get Sam to keep going, but he ignored them all completely.
It was when Ron leaned down and said, "Sam, you can do this. Sam, just look at mom." That Sam actually listened, looking at his mom, a whole other sadness washing over him as he realized how disappointed they must all be. How troublesome he's become, because he knows that he is not moving from this spot.
