"Yuriko chan, please run away!", the mother held the four year old girl and quickly pushed her into the passage leading to the garden at the back. "RUN! DON'T LOOK BACK! I'LL COME GET YOU!"
"Okaachan?"
"RUN!" She said before quickly shoving her out, and shutting the door behind her.
"WHERE IS THAT CHILD?" Yuriko heard stray voices as her mother tried to divert their attention with her absence, "she's... not here".
"WHERE IS SHE? YOU KNOW SHE ATTRACTS DEMONS! WHERE ARE YOU HIDING HER???" A few other voices joined "FIND HER!"
Yuriko quickly recalled what her mother said and ran towards the gate as fast as she could.
'Run! Don't look back.'
When she heard her mother's ghastly scream, she froze; and just then, one of the villagers saw her and they began chasing after.
"SHE IS HERE! STOP HER!" They threw the sticks in their hands. Then they proceeded to pick up stones.
"OKAACHAAAN" she kept running with tears streaming down her face, her flowy yukata getting caught under her tiny feet as unknown objects hit her, and some of them missed. She tripped a few times upon impact but she didn't stop running.
She ran for hours until she was out of her village and in the middle of the forest. It was barely sunset but it was getting darker by the passing second, "O...Okaachan" she wiped her tears as she kept walking, calling out to her mother with how scared she was. Her bare feet hurt with how much she'd run. She could barely feel the thorny pebbles pricking her tiny feet. With every trembling step she remembered her mother, her heart racing erratically as she desperately searched for someone so she could ask them for help. Help her find her mother again.
She stopped dead in her tracks when she felt a pair of eyes on her. Her eyes still blurry with all the tears, her face warm, her clothes soiled and torn. She was too scared to look in that direction.
"You're bleeding", she heard a small boy say.
She dreadfully looked in his direction, expecting the worst to happen. White hair, blue eyes, around 7 years old.
"What's your name?" He asked stoically when she didn't respond to his earlier comment.
She sniffled looking at him, unable to answer. She wanted to ask him for help. She wanted to ask him to find her mother, but she couldn't talk. She screamed as she broke down with what had happened earlier that day. Her mother had been beaten to death. And she knew it was because of her.
"Come with me", he remained unfazed, watching her struggle as she slowly walked towards him.
"Oka-" she tried to speak but the tremors caught up to her tongue "chan". She looked so helpless, he didn't want to leave her behind. "Is she around?" He asked and she shook her head. "Is she... okay?" He hesitated.
She shook her head again and he'd perceived that something was wrong.
"I can't take you home". He mumbled to himself but enough for her to hear. "Come with me, I'll find a place for you".
"SATORUU" he heard his mom call from a little away, his house was close by.
"I'm going to sneak you around, don't make a noise", not once did she see his face change. His words were so chilly but that was everything to Yuriko, she didn't mind his cold demeanour.
Satoru snuck her around his house, all the way to the other end of their estate, until they arrived at a tiny dilapidated shed. He pulled away a few planks of wood and laid it inside. The roof wasn't the best and it was barely holding, but it was the best he could do.
"I'll get you some food" he said as he helped her in. His face scrunched a little when she saw the gash on her head and the bruises all over her. Her feet looked terrible.
She instantly curled inside, in a corner of the shed and quietly watched him talk.
"Make sure nobody finds you." He said, "you have to stay hidden at all times."
She just watched him with hollow eyes and he didn't understand what she meant to say, "understood?" He raised his brows.
She nodded.
"What's your name?"
She hesitated.
"I'm Satoru".
"Yuri...ko"
"SATORU!" He heard his mother call out to him again.
"Stay here" and with that, he ran back to his house.
Yuriko didn't understand why he was helping her. She also didn't understand why she couldn't talk anymore. It was the strangest feeling for her. Away from home, away from her mother, cold, hurt, bleeding and bruised, nestled in a dilapidated shed which could collapse any minute.
Yuriko's mind had stopped functioning. When he brought her food and some medicine, she didn't know what to do. She just stared at it and at his face. He prompted her to eat soon and quickly took out the antiseptic before cleaning her wounds. He took a clean wash cloth and wiped her soiled face before proceeding to clean the wounds on her head, "why would anyone do this?" He mumbled to himself in irritation.
"It's not much food" he guiltily said. She knew he'd gotten her a portion from his dinner that he had to sneak out of the house since he couldn't ask for more and arouse suspicion.
The wound on her upper back was pretty deep. "You need stitches" he said before pausing for a second.
"Hold still" he promptly said, "don't make a noise". He used his reverse cursed technique to heal her wounds to an extent "I'm not very good at this" he knew it would leave a scar but it wasn't as bad. Once he cleaned all her wounds he used reverse cursed technique to heal her a little more. But he knew his limitations. He couldn't use it perfectly and he didn't push himself to venture into new boundaries.
He handed her a thick shawl before taking his leave. He turned around to leave, knowing fully well that if the villagers or the others from his clan found her, both of them would be in big trouble. She didn't seem like she had any cursed energy, either. His breaths got heavier with every step he took.
"Thank you" he heard her whisper. He paused in his tracks when he heard her voice, a small smile forming on his face that barely lasted for three seconds.
"Don't get caught" was all he said before he left.
