Alex's Point of View

As visiting hours ended, I said my goodbyes to Hayley. I also apologized countless times. Everything was my fault, and we hadn't even ran into the people trying to hurt us yet.

As I walked out of the hospital, I felt the worst I'd ever felt in my life. I got in the car, and drove back to the hotel.

I texted the friends that were staying there, and found out where our room would be. One of them met me in the parking lot with a key. We both went back inside, and went to our rooms.

I laid down in the bed with the TV on. I thought the white noise might help me fall asleep, but it didn't. I was completely aware of the empty space next to me. I didn't have Hayley's light snoring, and I couldn't wrap my arms around her tiny waist.

I checked my phone every couple minutes. I needed a text from her, but I didn't get one. I got a couple from the friends that were just a few rooms down, but that didn't matter right now.

I flipped through the channels on the TV. I was so bored, and all I wanted to do was sleep. I needed the time to pass a lot faster than it was.

I got out of the bed, took my phone off the charger, grabbed my room key, and left. I walked down to the bus stop, and waited for the bus. I was glad I didn't have to waste time changing since I never changed into pajamas.

The bus came ten minutes later, and I sat in the middle. I stared out the window, and watched the lights go by. I rode, and rode. I rode until I was the only one left. I knew the driver was getting irritated, so I got off near the hospital.

I had to walk a block or so, but I didn't mind. The air wasn't as humid as it was earlier in the day, and it had cooled down a lot. It was pleasant.

I walked around- past the hospital, back to the hospital, anywhere. I went to a fast food restaurant after a while because I realized I was hungry. I got the food, and sat down. I was the only one there besides the workers.

I ate slowly. I could see the workers cringing as they watched me. The sign on the door said they were open all night, so I could stay as long as I wanted.

I checked my phone again, but there was nothing. I knew Hayley was probably asleep, but I didn't want to accept it.

After I finally finished my food, I threw the trash away, and started back outside. In a few hours the sun would be rising.

I walked into the hospital, and asked about visiting hours. The lady looked at me like I was crazy.

"Eleven AM to eight PM," she told me. I nodded, and thanked her. I walked around outside for a while before deciding to bring up the maps. I had it guide me back to the hotel.

I laid back down on the bed, still in my clothes and shoes. I set my alarm on my phone for ten-thirty, and then dozed off.

There was a knock on the door at ten. I groaned, but ripped the covers off. I stumbled out of the bed, and walked over to the door. I looked through the little hole, and then opened the door.

"Morning," he said. I opened the door, and backed up enough for him to come in. "You look like death."

"Yeah, well I didn't sleep very well," I said, rubbing my face with my hands. I let the door shut, and went to sit on the bed. "What do you want, Jack?"

"Just wonderin' what you're up to today," Jack said. "Rian and I were gonna head off to-"

He kept talking about I didn't really hear anything he said. All I could focus on was that I wanted to get to the hospital. I made Jack leave after a couple minutes, and I got ready.

I changed my shirt, gathered everything I needed, and then I started out again. Instead of waiting for the bus again, I took my car. I parked at the hospital, and went inside.

Visiting hours started in half an hour, so I sat in the waiting room. I couldn't keep my leg from bouncing against the floor. I felt my face, and noticed that I needed to shave.

I checked my phone again, and stared at the screen. I needed something from Hayley, anything.

The time finally came, and I made my way back to her room. I knocked on the door, and her head moved to look at me. She smiled, and waved me in. I smiled back, and ran over to her bedside.

"How're you feeling?" I asked. I sat down next to her in bed again, and she leaned her head on my shoulder.

"Well, my head still hurts, but it's better," she said. We both looked at the small TV. Some talk show was playing.

"That's good, kind of. How's the food?" I asked. She laughed, and reached for the TV remote. She put the TV on mute.

"It's hospital food, what do you think?" She answered. I laughed, too. I hopped out of the bed.

"I brought you some real food," I said. I picked up the bag sitting on the chair, and turned back to her. Her eyes were closed, and I could tell something was wrong. I quickly ran around the room. I needed to find something sharp.

I managed to cut my hand, and then put it in a small, paper cup. I added a little water, and then ran it back to Hayley.

"Drink this," I said. Her eyes were barely open. The machines were starting to detect that something was wrong. I held the cup to her lips, and forced it down her throat.

The machines started to show that she was stable. I crushed the cup, and threw it in the trash. I started to breathe again. I put the cut up to my mouth, and waited for the bleeding to stop. I sat on the side of her bed, and steadied myself.

"Hayley? How do you feel?" I asked.
