Alex's Point of View

We were finally ready, and we started out to the elevator. We were going to be late, but it didn't really matter. If the guys wanted to leave without us, let them go.

I pushed the button for the elevator doors to open, and they did. We both walked inside. When Hayley pushed the button for the lobby, sparks started shooting out. I pulled her over to my side. The lights were flashing, but the sparks had stopped shortly after they started. I put myself in front of her, and looked at the buttons.

"Did you break it?" I asked. The elevator doors closed and I thought everything was fine. Until the buttons started sparking again and caught onto the floor. I watched the small flames start, and the black smoke rise.

"You have your phone, right? I left mine in the room," Hayley said. I was barely listening because I was lost in my own thoughts. I felt her starting to stick her hand in my front pocket.

"Whoa, no, I'll get it." I said. I held her hand back, and used my other hand to get my phone out of my pocket. I dialed for help, and then we had to sit down to try to get away from the smothering smoke.

"Alex, there is no way we are getting out of here." Hayley said. I handed her the phone and scooted closer to the buttons. I tried to hit the one that opens the door, but ended up burning myself. Hayley was screaming at me to get back.

I stuck my hand through again, and hit the button. The elevator made the ding noise, but that was it. The doors didn't open. I sat back down by Hayley, who was still talking to an operator. I put my arm around her and she laid her head on my shoulder. I could hear the lady on the other end of the phone yelling, "stay with me, come on. Hayley? Hayley, are you there?"

"We're here." I said. We were told that the fire department was now at the hotel. I kept nudging Hayley with my shoulder to keep her awake, but she'd stopped moving. "Hayley?"

I moved so I could support her. I moved us as close to the doors as I could without setting us on fire. I put my lips on hers and breathed in.

"Come on, Hayley!" I yelled. I started pounding my hands against the elevator door. There had to be someone around. Someone had to help. "Hayley," I begged. "You've gotta wake up." My eyes were watering from the combination of smoke and emotion.

I leaned over her again, and gave her mouth-to-mouth. She still had a pulse, so she was still alive. I just had to get her out of the elevator.

I propped myself against the wall by the door, and started pushing the door back. It took a lot, but I managed to get the door open a little bit. It was enough to get a little ventilation. I put myself inside the door, and held it back with my legs. I reached over slowly, and tried to reach Hayley. I had to balance the super heavy door, and reaching over to Hayley.

I managed to grab her, and pull her over slightly. I got her head on my chest, and then looked down. We had gone down a little bit, but it was a jump to the floor. Someone ran over and looked up.

"Could you catch her, please?" I asked. The person nodded, and I turned Hayley around. I started lowering her by her feet until the other person had hold of her. I leaned as far as I could, and until the person could carry her. The rest of the firefighters had been working to get me out.

The fire was being fueled by the oxygen from the outside. It had spread a lot further, and if Hayley was still in here, we'd be in trouble.

My legs were shaking, and I had to get back inside. I quickly moved over right next to the door, and it slammed shut. I pulled my knees to my chest, and wrapped my arms around them. They were working to get me out. It was just a matter of time- time I didn't really have.

I'd only been burned alive once, but I didn't remember it. I never would have known it happened if my parents didn't tell me about it.

The fire was right at my feet. I closed my eyes and tried to prepare myself. I bit my lip and tried to steady my breathing. I was going to be fine. The pain was only temporary.

I felt the elevator drop, and the ding noise go off again. I stood up, and put the top of my shirt over my nose and mouth. The door was being pulled open. I tried to help, but I really didn't have any strength left.

Something was put in the door to hold it open, and someone put their hand inside. I quickly grabbed it, and jumped out of the elevator. I collapsed on the ground in a coughing fit. Oxygen was in my lungs once again.

I sat up and looked around. I had to blink a lot to get my eyes to focus. I found Hayley sitting in a chair. She was hooked up to oxygen, which was probably for the best. I grabbed the back of a chair, and pulled myself up. I stumbled over to the chair next to Hayley's, and collapsed into it.

I took her hand, and closed my eyes. I took a deep breath, and then opened them again. I kissed her hand, and then focused on my breathing again. How many times was she going to almost die? I wasn't sure if I would be able to handle it if something did happen to her. I almost lost it with the head injury.

Something had to change. Something had to give. I couldn't keep putting the love of my life in danger.
