i'm still young; wide-eyed and hopeless

We showed up at some random house with one bag for each of us. Everything else was gone from all the kidnapping and car-crashing. Alex went straight up to the door, and I followed behind slowly.

"Alex...who's house is this?" He turned and smiled at me, and then hit the doorbell button. I tried to question him again, but the door opened. A woman pulled Alex into a hug, and then turned to me and did the same.

"Oh! We were starting to think you weren't going to show!" She said. She stepped inside, and Alex followed. I walked in, and the house was gorgeous. I just stood there and looked around. The woman took my hand, and pulled me further into the house. I panicked a little and looked behind me. Alex was following, and smiling.

The woman made me sit down on the couch, and she plopped herself next to me. There was a man and a teenage girl in the other seats too. I glanced up at Alex, who sat next to me on the armrest.

"Is this her?" The man asked. Alex nodded, and took my hand.

"Hayley, this is my family," Alex introduced. His dad's name was Peter, his mom's Isobel, and his sister's was Ally. I was just freaking out. When I got the chance, I excused myself. I stood up quickly, and walked out. I held my stomach and tried to look for a bathroom.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Alex whispered as he followed me. I kept looking for the bathroom. "Hayley?" He asked, and grabbed my arm. He turned me around to face him, and I kept my other arm on my stomach.

"Where's the bathroom?" He pointed down the hall, and let me go. I ran in, and puked in the toilet without even turning on the light. Alex came in, and turned on the light for me. He also sat next to me, and held my hair back.

"What's going on, Hayley?"

"I'm vomiting, Alex," I said as I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand. I leaned back, and thought it was over. But I felt the feeling again, and leaned over the toilet.

"I understand that, but why are you vomiting?"

"I don't know," I yelled. Alex left me to get cleaned up when I was sure I was done. He went downstairs to explain my absence. I washed up in the sink, and looked at myself in the mirror. I was pale, and I looked like shit.

When I left the bathroom, Isobel was waiting. She brought me to a spare bedroom- which was probably supposed to be Alex's- and made me lay down. I felt fine, and I told her, but she wasn't buying it.

She handed me a glass of water, and watched me drink it. The whole glass in one sitting. I was going to have to get up and pee as soon as she left.

I fell asleep shortly after she left. I didn't even realize I was tired until I started to fall asleep.

When I woke up, my head was pounding. I got out of bed, and went back out to the main room. That room used to have the whole family seated in it, but now there was no one. I reached into my pocket for my phone, but it wasn't there.

"Alex?" I called. I looked as far as I could into the kitchen- still no one. I looked out a window into the back yard, and still couldn't find anyone.

I ran back over to the room I had been in. I found my phone, a glass of water, and a note on the bedside table. I took a sip of the water, put my phone in my pocket, and read the note.

Hayley--

My mom and sister ran out to the store to get food for dinner. My dad wanted me to help him with a problem on his car. We'll be out in the garage.

Alex xoxo

I took my phone back out of my pocket and read the time. I slept for at least three hours. I blew out a sigh, and put the phone back in my pocket. I went out the front door, and walked over to the garage.

"Alex? Mr. Gaskarth?" I called out. As I got closer to the garage, Alex came out. He wiped his hands on his jeans, and then hugged me.

"Hey! How are you feeling?" He asked. We separated, but he put his arm on my back, and guided me over to a seat in the garage.

"I'm fine. I was fine after I vomited."

We waited outside for the other girls to return. Once they did, we had to unload all the groceries. I'd forgotten what it was like to be part of a normal family.

Ally started dinner, and Alex's mom pulled me aside. She brought a Walmart bag into the room, and closed the door behind us. I sat on the bed, and watched her.

"I bought you this," she said as she pulled a box out of the bag. I was speechless as she handed it to me.

"A pregnancy test?" I asked. She held the box closer to me, but I still didn't take it. There was no way I was pregnant. "I'm not pregnant."

"Honey, I've been pregnant twice. I know a pregnant girl when I see one," she said. She set the box down next to me, and then left to go help with dinner. I stared at the box a little longer. I came to the conclusion that I had to hide it.

I hide it somewhere in the room where Alex would never accidentally find it. I was sure I wasn't pregnant. This would all pass in a few days. I just knew it.
