We gathered everything up, and checked out the next morning. We put everything in the back besides the food. We rolled the windows all the way down and turned the music all the way up. We had a long drive ahead of us, and we were fully prepared.
We weren't that prepared. It started raining at the worst time. Alex was too distracted with the traffic to close his own window. I managed to close mine, but the rain was so heavy, I could still feel it from his window.
"Alex, you only need to move one hand to close the window!" I yelled. I was ready to scoot over and take care of it myself.
"It's fine, just a little longer," he said. I groaned and leaned back in the seat. I felt like I was soaked. He kept driving, completely focused on the road.
"Alex! For fuck sake, close the window!" I yelled. He took both hands off the wheel, and pushed the button to close the window. "Was that so hard?"
Once we'd chilled a little, I changed the CD. I put in Underdog Alma Mater by Forever The Sickest Kids. Alex and I both sang along to every single song.
He didn't want to stop to have lunch, so I tried to feed him. I ended up just making him a sandwich and telling him to drive one handed. I mean come on, it's not that hard.
After lunch, my parents called. I'd talked to them throughout the trip, but they usually had a set day and time they'd call. This was completely out of the blue. I was scared they were going to beg me to come home.
"Hey, mom," I answered wearily. Alex turned to me and mouthed something. I shrugged, and tried to listen to my mom.
"Are you guys out on the road again?" She asked. I couldn't tell if she was worried or nervous or just genuinely wanted to know.
"Uh, yeah mom. We're on our way to Texas."
"That's great sweetie. We were wondering if you were coming home soon."
"Do you have me on speaker?"
"Yes, but-" My mom tried to explain, but my dad cut her off.
"It's your mother's birthday next week, and we expect you to be back," my dad demanded. I looked at Alex with my mouth wide open. He had no idea what was going on.
"Well, are you gonna pay for my plane ticket?" I asked. There was no way we could make the drive back in time. Not unless we left now.
"No, you should be able to drive."
"Dad, we're in the very bottom of Louisiana. We're going deep into Texas, and we're not going back to Tennessee. I'm not a little kid, and you can't boss me around."
"You tell 'em, baby," Alex said, and hit the steering wheel with his hand. I smiled, and held back my laughter.
I argued with my parents a while longer. I finally had enough and hung up on them. I turned my phone off and threw it in the backseat.
"They wanted me to come home by next week," I told Alex. We both agreed that there was no way. We talked more, and I made us both another sandwich. After that, I fell asleep. My head was resting on the window, and my feet were up on my seat.
I woke up a couple hours later. We were at a gas station. Alex was filling the car up, and I unbuckled my seat belt. I got out and he greeted me.
I grabbed some cash, and went inside. I went to the bathroom, and then bought us both something to drink. I was seriously dehydrated.
We got back on the road, and had the music blaring again. It was really the only way to drive.
"I talked to my dad," Alex finally admitted. I turned the music off, and turned to face him.
"What? That's amazing," I said. I sounded as excited as I was. Alex hadn't heard from his parents in over a year. I didn't know the full story, but they were in contact now.
"Yeah, I haven't asked where they're living yet. I think I need to kinda gain the trust back. I'm gonna call him everyday, I think." It was so cool to watch him talk about his dad. He looked up to him, I could tell. I couldn't wait to meet him.
I leaned over and rested my head on Alex's shoulder. "I love you," I whispered. He whispered it back, and kept driving. I knew he wasn't going to stop until we got to Texas.
I got my phone from the backseat and turned it on. I waited for it, which took forever. I listened through a couple of the voicemails. The first ones were about how mad they were, but then they started to become panicked.
There was one about how a couple of my old friends had gone missing. I immediately called them back. I knew they wouldn't use that as bait.
"Mom? What do you mean Taylor and Jeremy are missing?" I asked. Alex gave me a look. He'd met them a couple times. He'd definitely be able to point them out in a crowd.
My mom explained everything, and I was speechless. How could this happen? I told my mom to keep me updated, and then we stopped talking. After I was done talking with her, I told Alex.
"Do you wanna go home?" He asked. I shook my head, and tried to think.
"Us being there isn't going to help anything."
We drove for a super long time. I wanted to sleep more, but I couldn't. I had too much on my mind.
We finally made it to Austin. We got a room in this huge hotel. It was like fifteen stories tall. Our room was only on the fifth floor, though. It also had roof access, which we didn't really care about. It was still cool though.
This was when I found out that Alex's friends had also come along. They would be here in less than an hour. It was kind of annoying, but there wasn't much I could do about it.
