Hayley's Point of View

Alex and I were both cleared, and we went back up to our room. His friends went out to dinner, but I was too shaken up to leave the room. I even forgot how hungry I was. We were both sitting on the side of the bed; All the locks on the door were locked. He was getting very paranoid.

Alex took his shoes and socks off. He noticed there was a burn on his left foot. I took off my heels, and I had the exact same burn. My shoes weren't burned at all, but Alex's were.

"I got you out before the fire even came close to you," Alex assured. I touched the burn on my foot, but it didn't hurt. Alex touched his, and winced.

"What the-" I started, but I couldn't finish.

"It's fine. It won't hurt for long," he told me. But I had to figure out where my burn came from, and why it didn't hurt. Alex had an idea, and he went to get something from his bag. "Put your hand up like this." He flipped his wrist, and had his hand palm up. I did what he said.

He then took a pocket knife, and made a small cut on his palm. He winced a little as he did it, but it probably felt like a paper cut. We both watched my hand. A small little cut surfaced, and started bleeding, just like Alex's.

"What the fuck," Alex said. I moved my hand around as the cut formed a tiny pool of blood. Alex's healed in a couple minutes.

"This has never happened before?"

"No, I don't think so."

"I need you to tell me everything," I told him. I knew he wanted to have his secrets, but I was involved now. We had no idea what would happen to me if he died. We had to go into lock down mode.

"Okay, I guess I have to. I'll start with the basics. Whatever this is skips a generation. My grandpa has it, but my dad doesn't. My grandpa is actually dead now. We have a set end date, usually in old age, where we die of natural causes. So, I'm not exactly immortal.

I've done the giving the blood thing before. I gave some to my mom, but I guess I didn't get hurt for a while after, so we didn't notice whatever we're experiencing right now. Maybe it'll wear off?"

"That's a lot to take in," I said. I leaned back onto the bed, and Alex took my hand. He went to get something to clean up my hand. As he was washing the cut, I thought of a question. "Could you donate your blood and, like, cure diseases?"

"I don't know, actually. But there is a theory that if you were to be drained of your blood, and someone drank it, they would become immortal, and you would die. That's why there are people after me," he said. He didn't look at me as he said it. He just kept looking at my bloody hand.

"That's terrifying."

"I've had nineteen years to deal with it. Nothing terrifies me anymore."

"Really? You seemed pretty terrified in that elevator," I said. I had a smirk on my face, and he glanced at me. He got up and threw away what he was using to clean my hand. He laid back down next to me, and told me another story.

"That's because when I was a baby, someone set my nursery on fire. They wanted to see if I got the gene, if I would survive. Everything was destroyed. My parents told me about it, even though it was super hard for them to talk about. I can't imagine what my dad's had to avoid," he said. I could see him reliving everything from his childhood. I wrapped my arms around him.

"That's horrible," I said. He wrapped his arms around me, too.

"I'm gonna make sure no one ever hurts you," he said. I had my head on his chest. I couldn't look at him, because if I did I'd cry. We sat in silence for a little while, and my thoughts were buzzing around in my head. I couldn't get a break.

"Why don't your friends know about your..." I started, but realized I didn't know what to call it. It wasn't exactly immortality, but there had to be a word for it.

"Why don't we call it... sempiternal?" He suggested. I wasn't sure of the meaning, but it sounded pretty cool. I nodded, and looked at him.

"So why don't your friends know you are sempiternal?" I asked, using his fancy word.

"I never told anyone else."

"No one? Not even when you were a little kid?"

"My parents made it very clear that this wasn't a joke."

I sat up by him, and kissed him. It felt like i'd been forever since we last kissed. He moved on top of me, and continued the kissing. He reached for my pants, and I started to panic a little.

"No," I gasped. He stopped, and rolled back over to his side.

"I'm sorry. Did I take it too far? Let's just-"

"No, no. It's fine. I just wanna wait for the right time."

"I understand," he said, wrapping his arms around me. He kissed my neck, and then I felt him rest his head on it.

"Love you."

"Love you, too."
