cry your eyes out

Alex's Point of View

I managed to make it to my car, and bawl my eyes out. Hayley was gone. She was shot, and then they took her. I didn't even have a chance. I could have brought her to the hospital, and maybe saved her. But Jack and Rian had to fucking take her from me.

I slammed my fists against the steering wheel. I kept hitting until they started bleeding. My face was completely soaked from my tears, and hideous noises were coming from my mouth. I pushed my hair back from my forehead, and tried to slow my breathing.

But I told her I would make sure nothing bad ever happened to her. I told her I'd protect her. And look where she was. I didn't have anything for her family; I didn't know her last words.

I was in no condition to drive anywhere. Instead, I called my dad. I found out where he was, and I bought a plane ticket. I took a cab to the airport, and got on the plane. All I had was my small carry-on, but it was enough.

A change of clothes, some sleeping pills, my phone, and my wallet. I took the sleeping pills once I was sat in my seat. I needed to get through the ride, and then I'd be back home. I leaned the seat back a little, and closed my eyes.

A few hours later, a flight attendant was waking me up. I grabbed my bag, and ran off the plane. I threw my backpack on my back, and walked out of the airport. I got a taxi, and told them the address.

Los Angeles is gigantic. It wasn't a surprise that my family had moved here. They could blend in, and stay hidden. It was perfect, really.

I paid the driver, and then stepped out. I was standing on the driveway, just staring at the house with my mouth wide open. I'd found them after a year. I was back with my family.

I walked up the driveway, and stepped onto the porch. I rang the doorbell, and wiped my sweaty hands on my jeans. It was from the mixture of it being hot outside, and the anxiety that was filling my insides.

"Alex?" My mom asked. She looked me up and down, and then covered her mouth with her hands. "Alex!" She screamed. She stepped onto the porch, and threw her arms around me. She was crying, and I felt like crying too. But I'd done enough of that.

My dad and sister also stepped out, and joined the hug. There were lots of tears and hugging.

"We were just about to eat dinner. Are you hungry?" My mom asked. I couldn't say anything, so I nodded. I followed the three of them inside. They all sat down at the already set table. My dad got up, and grabbed a plate and silverware for me.

"So, where's this girl you've been telling me about? She sounds very special," my dad said. My mom yelled at him for not telling her that he'd talked to me. My sister told them to stop yelling. She also wanted to hear about the girl.

"Um, well, she was very special-" I tried to talk about her, but I couldn't. I bit my lip, and stared at my empty plate. "Excuse me," I said quickly. I pushed my chair back, and walked out as fast as I could.

I ran upstairs, and went into a bathroom. I closed the door, and sat on the floor. I was against the bathtub, and I broke down crying again.

I'd told my dad all about her. I told him that I couldn't wait for the whole family to meet her, and that she was the one. Once I pulled myself together, I washed my face with cold water. There was a knock on the door, so I opened it. My dad stood there, looking kind of sad.

"What's wrong, Alex?"

I followed him back downstairs, and sat back at the table. The food was passed around, and we ate. We talked like a family, and laughed. It was like old times, but my heart still hurt.

I was sitting on the couch with my dad. The girls were doing dishes in the kitchen. I would've helped, but I needed to talk this out.

"Hayley's dead," I said. I looked at my hands instead of at him. It was all so hard. The more I thought about her, the more I wanted to cry my eyes out. "Jack Barakat and Rian Dawson, from that school in Baltimore, they turned against me. Jack shot me and pushed me off a roof, and then they tried to kidnap Hayley.

Then they managed to shoot her in the back, and take her again. Now I'm here, and I feel like I'm dying. I'm actually dying, and it's not gonna go away at midnight."

"Why would they take her if she was dying, though?" He asked. I sighed and shrugged.

"Just so I wouldn't have her."

"What if they brought her to a hospital? If they tried to take her before, they must think she's pretty important. Maybe they brought her somewhere to heal up."

I wanted to believe it, but it didn't seem possible. He started asking me more detailed questions. He even asked if we'd ever had sex. I was hesitant to answer, but I told him anyway.

"Alex, she's alive," he said. I looked at him like he was crazy. Maybe he had gone crazy. He was getting kind of old. "My mom and dad died at the same time. Why do you think that is?"

"I didn't know that," I said. My mind start racing. If Hayley was alive, how the hell was I gonna find her?

"Once you do it, your partner can't die either. She's alive, and it doesn't sound like she's with the right people," he said.

I spent the night at my family's house. I couldn't really sleep, so I decided to do research. I had to find Hayley. Now that I knew she was alive, and she would be alive as long as I was, I wasn't ever going to let her go.
