your soul was conscious of the path you chose

Alex barely had his shoes on before he was out the door. He sprinted down the sidewalk as fast as he could. He knew she couldn't drive and couldn't have gone far. Her dad was in his car, also going around. Alex was desperately calling out her name and searching around. He knew she didn't have her phone but called her multiple times just to try.

He had an awful feeling that he wasn't going to be able to help her. He was holding his phone in his hand as he rounded the corner. The phone started vibrating, and he quickly answered.

"Any luck?" Mr Williams asked. Alex sighed as he slowed to a walk.

"No, what about you?" He said as he shook his head. Alex had dreamed of her waking up since she'd fallen asleep, but this was never how he imagined it.

"Nope. I can't think of anywhere else to look," Mr Williams said. He slowed at a stop sign and noticed Alex walking along on the sidewalk. We pulled up next to him, and Alex got inside.

"Can we go to the cops?" Alex asked. Mr Williams kept his hands spread equally on the wheel as he sighed. He turned his head to look at Alex, and tried to find the right words.

"The cops won't get involved this early. We just need to keep looking. It's a little lighter out, so hopefully she'll be easier to find."

He drove around for a while longer, but they still didn't find her. They went back home and Alex started inside first. He half expected her to be sitting on the couch. He was let down as he peered over and noticed it was empty.

"Dammit," he whispered to himself.

"What was that, Alexander?" Mrs Williams asked as she came down the stairs. Alex's head shot over to look at her.

"Nothing, just looking around," he said. Mr Williams opened the front door and started inside. Both Alex and Mrs Williams turned to watch him. He closed the door behind him, and then walked over to his wife.

"You didn't find her?" She asked. He wrapped his arms around her and she buried her head in his shoulder. Alex turned away, and walked into the kitchen.

He opened the fridge and looked through it. He didn't know why, but he just felt like looking. He closed the fridge again, and turned around. He leaned against the fridge doors and sighed. Everything had gotten messed up. He got lost in his thoughts. He was thinking about high school, and the first time he met Hayley. He remembered being nervous while talking to her, and eventually asking her to prom. He remembered meeting her parents for the first time and wondering if her dad would approve of him.

He came back to reality and ran out of the room. He ran right past Hayley's parents, and out the front door. He still didn't grab his coat, even though it was the middle of December. He got in his car, and drove around. He parked a block over, and got out again. He ran around, yelling for Hayley. When he couldn't find her, he got back in his car and drove another block over. He continued to do that all day.

When he went back to the house, there was a cop car in the driveway. He got out of his car and jogged up to the front door. He threw the door open and ran inside. All of Hayley's family was seated at the kitchen table with two police officers.

Alex didn't know how to feel as he leaned against the doorway. He tried to listen in, but he could kind of tell what was going on. Either Hayley was upstairs in her bedroom, or she was finally getting reported as missing.

Alex watched Mrs Williams' tears start to fall, and then her head being buried in her husband's shoulder. Andy shook his head and looked at the ground. Mr Williams put his arm around his wife, and looked sadder than Alex had ever seen him. This wasn't a reaction Alex was expecting.

The cops got up to leave, and so did her family. They all got into Mr Williams' car, and Alex got into his. The cops went first, then the Williams, and lastly Alex. He still wasn't sure what was going on, but he knew it couldn't be good.

They all parked at the police station. Mr and Mrs Williams got out of their car, but Andy stayed back. Alex got out of his car and joined Andy. The parents went inside with the cops, leaving just the boys outside.

"They think she's dead," Andy said without looking at Alex. He kept his head down and his hands in his pockets as he leaned against the car. "All of that waiting just for her to leave again."

"Hey, you don't know that for sure," Alex said. Even though he was starting to suspect the same thing, he had to try to be positive.

"Dad told me you were out looking all day," Andy said. He still didn't look up. Alex patted Andy's back and the two started inside. The next stop was the hospital.

Alex and Andy waited in the hospital instead of going down to the morgue. Alex could have gone, but Andy didn't want to see. Alex stayed with him so he wouldn't have to be alone. He had grown very close to Hayley's family while she was in a coma.

Mrs Williams was a mess when she got back. One look at her and the boys knew what had happened. Hayley was dead.

When she ran away, she went into town. She went to the top of the tallest building, and jumped. The police had the security footage, and the hospital had the almost unidentifiable body.

Alex only wished he hadn't left her alone when he went to get her parents. If he had stayed with her, he thought, she would still be with him. But he could never wrap his mind around why she would do it.

The truth is she was unhappy. She could never come back from the world her head created while she was in that coma. After all, the only way to escape your mind is to kill it.

A/N: I'm sorry this took so long and it's so crappy. I couldn't figure out how I wanted to end it, and turned ended up being super uninteresting. But it's finally over! So many twists and turns just to end up here. I hope you enjoyed it, though. It was pretty fun to write.

If you like the stuff I write, I'm currently writing another Haylex called 'Kids in the Dark' and I'm going to be starting an Alex Gaskarth fic called 'Escape Route'. Both are up now so if want, you can go check those out.

Thank you all for reading and you're all beautiful people. I feel like I need to say goodbye, so goodbye.
