I gave up on driving, and got off on a random exit. I didn't know where I was or what I was doing. I just wanted to get a hotel room, and lay down in a proper bed.
I searched the trunk of the car for a couple duffel bags. First, I needed a new shirt. I found a bag of Alex's clothes first, so I slipped on one of his. Second, there was one filled with cash. Alex would deny it if I asked, but I knew it was there.
I locked up the car, and went into the hotel. I asked for one room for the night, paid, and got the keys. The room was around back, so I drove the car back there. I put sunglasses on Alex, and put my arm around his back. I carried him inside, pretending he was drunk if anyone would ask. I got him inside, and on the bed.
I dug around in the trunk again for one of my bags. I wanted to at least be able to change clothes in the morning. I took a couple of the bags inside with me, and locked every lock on the door. I dropped the bags in front of the door, as if they would also help it stay shut.
I sat on the floor, and dug through the bags. I changed into shorts and I kept Alex's shirt on. I climbed into bed with him, and turned on the TV. I needed the white noise to calm my nerves.
I looked over at Alex. He hadn't moved since I put him on the bed. Part of me thought he would. He was laying straight, his head on the pillow. I moved the blankets on the bed, but they were hard to lift. I scooted myself under them and stared at the TV.
If I looked to my left, I saw Alex. If I looked forward, there was the TV. To the right was a big window with the shades drawn. I chose to look forward. The TV was more comforting than the other two.
I slowly fell asleep, but I would still catch some of the stuff on the TV. I could hear some of the voices, and sometimes see the old black and white shows. And I could have sworn I felt Alex get up and leave. I heard the door unlock, and open.
When I woke up, he was gone. It wasn't the first time. It still shocked me, though. The bags were moved closer to the bed, and the door wasn't locked anymore. I got up and looked in the small envelope. One of the two keys was missing.
I decided to get in the shower. I took the bag with my clothes, and I went into the bathroom. I locked the door behind me, and then turned on the water.
I took a quick shower, and about half way through I heard the room door open again.
When I was finished, I wrapped a towel around my body. My soaking, orange hair clung all over my face, and dripped down my back. I walked towards the bathroom door, and listened.
"Alex?" I called. The doorknob started moving, and I scrambled backwards. I slipped on the wet floor, and fell. I hit my head on the floor. I sat back up, and held my towel closer to my body.
"Hayley? Are you okay? Why's the door locked?" Alex yelled through the door. He kept trying to open it. I crawled over, and unlocked it. He swung it open, which hit me in the head, again.
"Ow," I groaned as I moved my hand to the side of my face. He reached his hands out for me to take.
"I am so, so sorry," he said. I put my hands in his, and he pulled me up. I moved one hand to my towel, and the other to my head. He walked me out to the bed, where I sat down. "Let me see."
He examined the bleeding side of my head. He sighed, and apologized again. Then, he had me turn around. Where I'd hit the floor wasn't bleeding, which I guess was good.
I moved my hair from my face as he went to get another towel. He dabbed at the bleeding spot with a wet towel, and apologized over and over again. I laughed as he continued.
"It's fine, really," I said. He brought my bag over so I could get dressed. He sat on the other side of the bed- the side where I'd slept- and he faced the big window. The curtains were still closed.
"I went out to get us breakfast," he said. I found a shirt in the bag, and a bra, and put them both on.
"Really?" I asked. I found underwear next, and put that on next. I had to dig around a lot more for another pair of shorts.
"It's sitting on the table. The coffee might be cold by now, but we could warm it back up. Do you know what time it is?"He rambled on. Once I was dressed, I crawled across the bed. I sat behind him, and put my arms down his chest. I rested my head right next to his.
"It's about nine. Did you happen to find anything out about where we are?" I asked. He tilted his head back to look at me.
"You don't know where we are?" He asked. I shook my head, and he laughed.
"Okay, make fun of me all you want. What happened while you were driving?" I asked. He laid back, so he was laying on top of me.
"There's a radio frequency that not everyone can hear. Someone was playing it, probably on purpose, and I passed out," he said. He took my hand, and played with my fingers.
"Alex, you didn't pass out. I think it killed you," I said. He furrowed his eyebrows, and got lost in thought.
"Oh, well. I guess that's possible. Let's get going," he said, and got up. I stayed laying in bed, watching him pack up.
