he doesn't even know you're alive

My eyes opened, and my vision started to come back to me. I was in some kind of hospital room. I reached for the button to call the nurse, and waited for someone to come in.

"Oh, good! You're awake," the nurse said as she walked in. "Midnight's a weird time, and your sleep schedule might be a little messed up."

"What happened?" I asked. I thought back, and I remembered that I should have died. "No," I whispered. If I remembered right, Jack and Rian had me, and Alex thought I was dead. It'd be pretty hard to be rescued if the only one who knew you were missing thought you were dead.

"Miss. Williams, are you alright?" The nurse asked. "Does your back hurt at all?"

I reached around to my back, and felt around. There was nothing, maybe just a little bump where a hole should've been.

"How did you know I would live?" I asked. The nurse sighed, and sat down on the edge of my bed. She reached out, and took my hand.

"We all thought you were gone, sweetie. I don't think I've ever seen someone survive a shot to the back like that. You're a living miracle, Miss. Williams."

"Do you know where my phone is? I need to call my boyfriend," I said. I was in a hospital gown, which meant my clothes had to be around here somewhere.

"I'll be right back." She left the room, and I was left in silence. After a couple minutes, she walked back in with Rian and Jack behind her. I tensed up, and knew this wasn't going to go well. Jack had my phone in his hand.

"I told you she was awake," the nurse said with a big smile on her face.

"What'd you give her? There's no way she should be alive," Jack asked. Both him and Rian were looking at me like I was some kind of lab experiment.

"She woke on her own. We did what we could to get her stable, and then the machines did the rest," the nurse said. She was way more excited than I was. The bad guys had me, and Alex thought I was dead.

"When can she be moved to her room?" Rian asked.

"She can hear you," I said.

"She better shut up," Jack said angrily. He stared at me, and I stared back. Rian went to the car to get my bag that I'd left in their car when I ran. I tried to get my phone from Jack, but he wouldn't hand it over.

I dug through the bag and decided on an outfit. The nurse helped me take off all the wires and shit, and then helped me out of bed too.

"Okay, where's the bathroom?" I asked. I pulled the hospital gown tighter to make sure I was covered everywhere.

"Oh, no. You're changing right here where we can see you. You aren't getting away this time," Rian said. I sighed, and took the clothes. I looked to the nurse, and she shrugged.

"Close the door, and you two have to turn around," I said. Jack and Rian went in front of the door, and faced it. I still wasn't thrilled about having to do it in the open like that. The nurse kept trying to help me, too, but I was fine. She kept looking for the wound, but it was gone.

Jack and Rian both took one of my arms, and started walking me down the hall. We went through these double doors and the entire place changed. They put me in this room, and I didn't even know what to make of it. The door locked behind me, and when I turned around I was surprised.

I ran over, and threw my arms around Taylor, and then Jeremy. "What are you guys doing here?" I asked. They were smiling as big as I was.

"We don't really know," Taylor said, glancing at Jeremy. "What are you doing here?"

"It's a long story," I said. I couldn't tell them about Alex. I was sure there were people listening, and I couldn't let them in on Alex's secret. He hadn't even told his best friends, he wouldn't want me telling people.

"You guys are missing though," I told them. I told them what my mom had said. People were looking all over.

"Well, we knew that much," Jeremy said. We sat down on the three beds that were provided in the room. "But, Hayley, seriously. What are you doing here?"

"I was taken too," I said.

"You need to get out of here. This is no place for you," Jeremy said.

"You think I don't know that? You guys gotta leave too."

"It's too late for us, but it's not for you," Taylor said. I tried to make sense of what he was saying, but I couldn't.

"What do you mean?"

"We should really be asleep," Jeremy said. The lights went out then. There were definitely people listening in. I heard them moving against the covers as they situated themselves. I did the same, but I couldn't actually sleep. This was all too insane.

I had to come up with an escape plan. There had to be a way out of here. Taylor and Jeremy were trying to convince me to leave, and I had to find out what happened to them. There was no way Jack and Rian were behind all of this.

I just had to get out, and get to Alex. Assuming we were still in the same state.
