Chapter #45 Louri’s POV It’s been a month since the premiere and shooting Scarlett’s arm is fully healed. She will have a scar but she is taking it in stride. Our Anniversary is this weekend and Scarlett wants to do a photo shoot which actually sounds pretty fun. I am very excited it’s our five year anniversary. Devon turned four in April. He is growing up so fast. I am currently on my way to a meeting with the General. “Lieutenant Colonel Evans reporting, Sir.” I say standing at attention with my hand in a salute when I enter his office. He returns the salute. “Sit down Lt Colonel.” He tells me and I do. “Now Colonel as you know the 4077th is getting ready for their next deployment.” He says. “Yes Sir it will be the longest one they’ve had. In a long time.” I say. “Yes well as their CO I want you as close to them as possible.” He says and my stomach sinks. “Sir am I being deployed with them?” I ask. “In a way. You speak German correct?” He asks. “Yes Sir I do.” I tell, him confused. “Good, you are going to need it. You are being transferred to a U.S base in Berlin, Germany. You leave in two weeks when the 4077th goes on deployment and you will stay there as long as the 4077th is on deployment. We have arranged family housing for you at the barracks. Don’t worry this isn’t permanite. Any questions?” He says. “May I go home and tell my wife?” I ask. “Yes you are dismissed.” He says and I stand and salute him before leaving.
Scarlett’s POV I just got off a video call with Noah Baumbach about Marriage Story and how we will start filming soon. “Mama you are home early.” Devon cheers. “Hey Babe… What’s wrong?” I ask, seeing the look on her face. “Can we talk in the office?” She asks. “Yeah.” I tell her and we go into the office and she lets out a large sigh. “I’m being transferred to Berlin.” She tells me. “WHAT? Sorry I didn’t mean to yell I.. That’s in Germany.” I say. “I know they have arranged family housing for us. And I will only be assigned there as long as the 4077th is on deployment. The General wants me one flight away from my men in case something happens.” She says. “But you live here, we live here.” I say. “And I told you when we met I’ll be here as long as I am assigned. It’s not permanent ok. When this assignment is over we’ll come back here. Plus you’ve always wanted to go to Berlin.” She says. “When do you have to be there?” I ask. “In two weeks.” She says. “TWO WEEKS! WE GET TWO WEEKS NOTICE!!” I yell. “Hey. I know this is hard but you knew what you were getting yourself into when you married me. I was wearing combat boots when we signed the papers.” She says. “I know it’s just I start filming Marriage Story next month I’ve already signed the contract and for JoJo Rabbit part of that will be filmed in Berlin anyway so that works out.” I ramble. “Hey we will work it out, we always do.” She says softly as she takes my hands in hers. “I’ll be able to be in Germany with you long enough for you to get settled. But what about the kids I know we talked about the possibility of them having to move around before we even started IVF to have Devon and we talked about it again when we decided to have more kids.” I am cut off by her lips on mine. “You were rambling Baby.” She says resting her forehead against mine. “Devon will probably love it.” I chuckle. “Yeah he probably will and the girls are only a year old they don’t know or care about what’s going on.” She says. “Ok looks like we are going to Germany.” I say. “You took this much better than Grace did since Greg will also be transferred to the same base as me.” She tells me. “And Grace loves the kids so they can stay in Germany while I’m filming.” I say. “Yeah I’m sure Grace would love to watch the kids. Now tell me about this photo shoot you booked for us.” She says changing the subject.
Louri’s POV Scarlett and I are packing with the “Help” of Devon if you could call it that and he is like a ball of energy because he gets to go on an adventure just like his Mama. That’s what I call my deployments when talking to him since he’s only four. “So the pictures should be in today so keep an eye out.” Scarlett tells me. “Ok, I will. I’m excited to see how they came out.” I tell her. “Me too.” She says just before the doorbell rings. “That must be them!” She squeals as she runs out of the room to the door. “Ready?” Scarlett asks, holding a large envelope. “Yes I want to see them.” I say. Scarlett lays them out on the bed and they look really good. “They came out so well Baby.” I say. “This is my favorite.” She says pointing to the black and white picture of my bicep and Maya’s little hand holding my dog tags shows off my newest tattoo very well. ) “Devon looks so cute in the little uniform.” Scarlett says. “He really does.” I says. Flash back to the photo shoot. [“Ok Louri I want you to hug Devon as if you just got home from deployment.” The photographer says so I squat down and just wrap my arms around him. “Devon do you think you smile?” The photographer asks so I tickle him slightly and the photographer snaps the photo. “Now that Scarlett has changed outfits we are going to take a shot of you Louri doing a pushup and Scarlett kissing you.” He directs so I do as I’m told. “Now Louri will hold Louisa and I will take a picture of Louisa’s hand touching where it says U.S Marines.” He says so I pick up my daughter and just hold her like I normally do. “Is it ok if I move her hand a little? I don't want to touch her without permission.” The photographer asks. “Yeah sure.” I say and he moves her hand so it’s placed just how he wants it for the picture and then takes the picture. Then I have to take my tags off so Maya can hold them in her hand for the picture. This is the last one we are doing and I get to show off one of my tattoos.] End of flashback.
The night before leaving for Germany “So we will head to the base around six am and then the corps will provide us with transportation.” I tell Scarlett. “Ok let’s get some sleep.” She says giving me a kiss goodnight which I easily return. “Good night Baby.” “Good night Marine.” And with that we drift off to sleep. Small time skip to landing in Berlin. “Alright we will be making our decent welcome to Berlin.” The pilot says as if this were a commercial flight. “You know it really feels like we are going back to Afghanistan because we alway make a stop here and jump onto another plane but we won’t be joining them.” Greg says motioning to the rest of the 4077th who will be taking another flight to camp Mason. “4077TH LISTEN UP!” I call out and they are all looking at me. “I know you will be heading straight for the plane to camp Mason so I am going to use this time to tell you don’t do anything stupid don’t try to play hero. Got it Marines?” I say and they all nod “SEMPER FI!” I yell out and they all respond with yelling “OO RAH!” back.
