Coming home to see Kai already there did not come as much of a surprise nowadays. Surprising was what was waiting in the lit up oven.
"You baked a whole cake?" Cole marvelled. "What's the occasion?"
"None, just felt like it. Is it a problem?"
"No! No, I– It's just..." He watched Kai twiddle with his hands, rock himself on his feet. There was a strange air about him but Cole couldn't pinpoint it. "Did you do something?"
"Why should I?"
"You're being weird." Cole joined them by the kitchen counter, getting a closer look to unnerve Kai further and hopefully make him spill the beans. "You didn't commit a crime or something, right?"
"What's so weird about baking a cake for my cake-loving boyfriend?" Scoffing, Kai pushed him away (which was rather a half-hearted slap at the chest rather than a proper push) and tried, really tried, to seem casual. Which only made Cole even more unsettled.
"There's nothing weird about that – I actually think I'm in heaven – but you're acting so strange." Brain cogs in full action, Cole looked them up and down, then glanced over the place. Nothing much of an eye-sore. "I'm not gonna be mad if you broke anything, you know that, right?"
Kai's nose scrunched up as he bent over to pull out the cake from the oven. "I'm not a child, I didn't break anything." Chocolate, shiny heaven, the aroma promising pure gold for his taste buds. "I just happened to have some spare time on my hands, so I decided to do something nice." Kai had to lean into his field of view, block the sight of the baked goodness. "Because that's what people do, you know?"
"Are you an angel? You have to be an angel," Cole sighed, taking Kai's hands and giving him a kiss. "Or a god, actually. The whole pantheon."
Chuckling, Kai squeezed his hands. "All right, I get it. I'll just take care of the finishing touches and he's all yours."
"I'm all yours."
Kai shook his head, Cole could drown in his eyes. And melt. God, his place smelled so good. "I can't believe you've been single for so long."
"I have a feeling this should be insulting to me but right now there's only one thing on my mind." Nose hooked on the warm aroma, stomach already demanding to get ahold of the deliciousness, eyes hung on the bright smile. Life was so good.
