Knocking on the door Nya directed him to, Cole waited for an answer that never came. Slowly, he peeked into the room to recognise a curled form beneath a blanket.
"Kai?" he tried whispering to no avail—his best guess was that they fell asleep. Not that it stopped him from talking, the silence rang in his ears like a gong.
"Brought you some medicine..." After closing the door and walking closer, he put the pills Zane gave him on the bedside table. Then he sat down on the very edge of the mattress, trying to not disturb the peace at all. He watched the blanket rise and fall and sighed, brushing the crumpled space between them.
"What's up with you, lately?" He fidgeted with the cover, unsure whether to leave or stay. Somehow each possible decision threatened to bring the end of the world, keeping Cole glued in a stalemate.
"You scolded me for not talking to you, for keeping you in the dark, you know?" Good thing Kai lay asleep and didn't have to hear his incoherent rambling. At least he got a second chance. "Hypocrite..." He slouched, turning away from the pile of mystery, and fumbled with his hands in his lap.
"Look, if it's something I've done, if I've been too pushy... I'd leave if you wanted me to... I'd just appreciate if you said something. But I'd like to make this work, fix whatever happened. I don't care if it's corny or cheesy, you did change my life, I think I became a better person, at least somewhat. I want to preserve this because you mean so unbelievably much to me. But as I said, just say, I'll go."
He listened to Kai's steady breath. Not even the conversation from below reached here. He could've gone and joined them, however, beneath all the anxiety flooding the room there rested the comforting, steady ground he lost sight of. It remained there, despite all the darkness and Cole leaned into the easiness of it.
After all, he said his piece. And now, waiting for the real deal, he might as well focus on other things than the worries that stole his dreamy nights.
Elbows digging into his knees, Cole took a deep breath before cupping his own cheeks in his hands. "You know, I've been exploring the city a lot lately. Everytime I stray away from the main roads, it's like discovering a whole new world. It's more fun than I thought. I even found a nice duck pond, that's a lovely place... Makes you forget about the loud world demanding your time for a moment. Wouldn't it be nice? To just be a duck? At least for a little while, just to take a short break from life. Maybe we could go to some spa one day, I haven't done that in what? Maybe even decades. I miss those trips...
