I saw my grandmother who had died many years ago in the street view on Baidu Maps.

The little old lady bent over and watched others playing chess with a smile.

The midsummer sun shone on her, and she was wearing that light blue top that had been washed until it turned white, as if she had never left me.

The time marked at the bottom of the screen is 2015, the summer eight years ago before her throat was brutally cut.

My tears fell immediately.

Grandma, it turns out we have been separated for so long.

Grandma, you were supposed to live a long life.

1 Before

that fall of 2015, I thought the world was a wonderful place.

My grandma and I live in Tongzilou, surrounded by familiar neighbors.

We enjoy the shade in the alleys in the summer, and drag our chairs out to bask in the sun in the winter.

Occasionally, an uncle would organize a game of chess, and grandma would come over to watch.

Dogs barked one after another, but they stopped at the security door and couldn't get out.

The force behind me that was imprisoning me became stronger, like an iron pincer, and I couldn't break free no matter how hard I struggled.

My neck and cheeks were burning and the clothes on my waist were pulled up, and he stuffed a piece of cloth into my mouth.

Then he pulled open my school shirt.

I struggled wildly and fell down with a row of bicycles.

Clattering, making violent noises in the dark night.

A bicycle hit his back, causing him to freeze.

I took the opportunity to get up and run away like crazy. I didn't get a few steps before he kicked me in the crook of my leg.

Then, he dragged her back by her hair.

The barking of dogs became even more frantic, there was the roar of cars passing by outside the alley, and the sound of fireworks rising into the sky in the city center.

Completely, drowning out my tiny struggling sounds.

The man was wearing a mask and a hat, and in the chaos, I reached out and scratched his face—
