Cain's P.O.V
My mother's crying face was the first thing I saw when I woke up. My mother hugged me tightly and said, "Thank the moon goddess that you are okay." I groaned and uttered, "You are crushing my bones, Mom." My mother giggled and stated, "I'm sorry, son. You have been sleeping for two days straight. Your father and I didn't know what to do." I scanned the room and asked, "Where is Alexander, Mom?" My mother gazed at my father and replied, "He is probably at school now. Why are you looking for him?" Amel ran into the room.
He put his hand on my mother's shoulder and said, "Let me examine him first, Mom. You can talk to him in a bit." My mother quickly moved aside. Amel looked lost. He scratched his head and uttered, "There is nothing wrong with Cain. I wonder why his pupils turned red." I jumped off the bed and looked into the mirror. I gasped when I saw my eyes. They were blood red. My father caught me when I was about to fall. He carried me to the bed and stated, "Stay in bed. We will get to the bottom of this. I have already summoned the head elder." I grabbed my father's arm and said, "I want to see Alexander Haile, Dad."
I winced when Maverick asked, "Why?" Maverick's powerful ancient wolf was on alert. It wouldn't be long before he discovered my wolf. I rubbed my face and said, "Calm Marius down first, Maverick." My brother grabbed my arm and yelled, "What did you say just now?" Maverick closed his eyes and asked, "When did this happen and why now?" My father looked at us in confusion. He frowned and uttered, "What's going on, Maverick?" Maverick grinned and replied, "I think Cain has something to share with us, Dad."
My mother sat on the bed. She stroked my head and said, "Don't be afraid, son. We are all here for you." I put my head down and uttered, "My wolf awakened when I touched Alex for the first time. Theon thinks he is our mate." My mother couldn't hold her excitement. She hugged me and stated, "I'm so happy for you, son." My father crouched down before me and stared into my eyes. He smiled and asked, "Are you shy, Theon? Is that why you have been hiding from your mother and me?" My wolf nodded. My father grabbed my hand and declared, "We are glad to have you, Theon. Please, protect my son from harm."
My wolf yipped when my mother kissed my temple. Amel patted my back and stated, "Congratulations, Cain. Theon and you make a good pair." Maverick sighed and asked, "Are you sure Alex is your mate?" I nodded and replied, "Yeah, Theon keeps calling out to him." My mother threw her arm around me and said, "We have known Alex since he was a baby. We all like him, but wait till you turn eighteen to make it official." I wanted to protest, but my mother was right. My father kissed my head and stated, "Your wolf just awakened, Cain. We still need to find out why the elders couldn't detect him. Take your time to form a bond with him while we investigate. Alex is not going anywhere. You will be our secret weapon from now on. Theon is shy, but I can sense he will be aggressive when he needs to be. I'll cancel the meeting with the head elder. No one needs to know about this yet."
I was disappointed. My mother chuckled and said, "That doesn't mean you can't talk to Alex, son." Maverick huffed and stated, "Who would have thought he would be your mate? The guy has been hanging around the mansion for ages. I have never seen you talk to him. By the way, isn't he a human?" Amel hummed and declared, "There is something mysterious about Alex's family. Mr. Haile's wounds healed within three weeks. I couldn't even find a scar on his body. It should have taken him longer to recover." Maverick kissed Amel's cheek and stated, "I'll look into this matter. Keep Cain here for now. I want to see who cares about him."
My eye color kept changing while I was in the hospital. Many packs sent me fruit baskets and flowers. My heart broke when Cliff told me Alex didn't want to see me. Theon and I were over the moon when Alex showed up. My life felt empty after Alex left. I made it my mission to befriend him. Alex ignored me when I approached him in the school's parking lot. Due to our schedule, it was hard to meet him. A month flew by in a flash. I grinned when I saw Alex waiting at the school's exit on a rainy Thursday. I wondered if he had car trouble. I stopped my car, rolled down my window, and asked, "Do you need a lift, Alex?"
Alex looked at his watch and replied, "Yes. My car is at a repair shop. Andrew promised to take me home, but he is taking longer than I expected." I motioned Alex to get in. Theon was yipping happily. Alex stepped into the car and then sent Andrew a message. He smiled and said, "Thank you for doing this, Cain. My mom asked me to buy some groceries. She won't be able to cook if I'm late. Drop me off at Walmart. I'll walk home from there." I wasn't going to let this opportunity slip through my fingers. I smiled and uttered, "What a coincidence. I need to buy some things as well. Let's go to the one with the underground parking lot."
Alex nodded, then stared out of the window. I gazed at Alex and said, "You are probably glad it's raining." My heart melted when Alex smiled. Alex nodded and replied, "Yeah. We almost lost a few plants due to the hot weather." Alex groaned when his phone rang. He checked the caller ID and turned off his phone. It was easy for Alex to ignore people, it seemed. We soon reached the supermarket. Alex exited the car and asked, "Have you been here before?" I shook my head. Alex chuckled and said, "Come. I'll show you the way." The housekeeper did the shopping for us at the house. I probably wouldn't even know which toilet paper to buy. I followed Alex inside.
Alex grabbed milk, tomatoes, paprika, and chicken. He gazed at my coke and asked, "Are you sure you have everything? Don't you want to buy rice or something?" I laughed and replied, "Alright. You got me. I just wanted to spend more time with you." Alex shook his head and walked to the counter. He handed his card to the cashier and said, "I'll be paying for his coke too." Alex put his hand up when I tried to protest. He gave me his address when we got into the car. It had fortunately stopped raining. Alex grabbed the grocery bag when we arrived. He smiled and uttered, "Thank you, Cain. I'll see you soon. Bye."
I grabbed Alex's shoulder and asked, "Can I pick you up tomorrow morning?" Alex sighed and replied, "I don't know what you are after, but I'm not as easy as people say." I huffed and stated, "I just want to be friends with you, Alex. If something blooms out of this relationship, then so be it." Alex chuckled and uttered, "You are crazy, Cain. Okay, pick me up at seven." Alex waved at me, then walked into the house. Alex's scent lingered in the car. I knew why he was so apprehensive. Arthur was a jerk. I vowed to mend my mate's broken heart.
