Chapter 8. Are we friends?

Alexander's P.O.V

My car suddenly gave up on me. The repair shop told me they had a busy schedule. It would take them days to fix the vehicle. I didn't want to drive my father's truck to school. It would be a pain to load and unload the garden tools. My mother dropped me off at school. I had classes with Andrew. I asked him if he could drive me home. He happily agreed to meet me at the exit. It was a rainy day. School was out for almost half an hour, and I hadn't heard anything from Andrew. I tried calling him, but he didn't pick up.

I was sure Andrew was with a girl. He tended to forget the world when he was having fun. Cain appeared at the right time. My mother had asked me to buy some stuff for her. I didn't want to be late. I realized I liked spending time with Cain. That is why I accepted his offer to pick me up for school. I went straight to my room after dinner. I remembered I had turned off my phone while I was putting my clothes away. I groaned when I saw all the missed calls from Arthur. Andrew hadn't even read my message yet.

I put my phone on charge and took a shower. I slept like a log that night. My mother knocked on my door to wake me up at six am. I jumped out of bed when I remembered Cain was picking me up. My father chuckled when I almost stumbled on the stairs. My mother sighed and asked, "What's the hurry, Alex?" I scratched my head and replied, "Young master Cain is giving me a ride to school. I don't want him to be late because of me." My father gazed at my mother and asked, "Since when are you two friends?"

I finished my glass of milk and replied, "We are just acquaintances, Dad. We live in different worlds. It's better to keep it that way." The doorbell rang while I was washing my hands. My mother was about to get up to open the door. I smiled at her and said, "It's probably Cain, Mom. Enjoy your meal. I'll see you guys later." My mother nodded and uttered, "Give him your phone number. I don't want him to catch a cold because of you. He just got released from the hospital, right?"

I groaned and yelled, "That was a month ago, Mom!" My mother scowled and said, "I don't care. Just do it." I wore my jacket, grabbed my scarf and bag, then opened the door. Cain was standing in the driveway. He turned to face me and stated, "Good morning, Alex." The guy looked gorgeous. I could see why everyone was pining for him. I greeted Cain and followed him to the car. I gazed out the window and said, "I forgot to ask what time your class starts today." Cain started the car and replied, "At eight. I'll use my free time to study. I have a test this afternoon."

I nodded and said, "Okay. Thank you for picking me up. We probably won't see each other for the rest of the day. Good luck on your exam." Cain smiled and asked, "Can I have your number, Alex? It will be easier to contact you that way." I grabbed a pen and paper and wrote my number for Cain. The guy smiled when I stuck the paper in his shirt pocket. I shook my head when Cain winked at me and declared, "I'll try not to bother you too much." We soon arrived at school. Cain and I stepped out of the car and walked to the entrance. Cain grabbed a paper bag from his backpack and handed it to me.

I opened the bag to check its contents. I gasped when I saw the snacks. Cain stroked my cheek and said, "Think about me while eating them." Cain disappeared before I could retort. I sighed while eating the Coke jellies Cain had given me at lunch. It seemed like I had attracted another bug. Trisha grabbed the bag and asked, "What are you moping around for?" Everyone looked up when Trisha yelled, "Coke candies! I haven't had them in a while!" I took the candies from Trisha before the others arrived. Trisha pouted. I ignored her and put the bag away. I winced when Arthur said, "As stingy as ever, I see." I was about to leave, but Arthur stopped me. He grabbed my shoulder and asked, "Why don't you pick up my calls anymore?"

I pushed Arthur's hand away and replied, "I have better things to do." Andrew was acting like he didn't have a care in the world. I patted his back and said, "Thanks for bringing me home yesterday, champ." Andrew looked at me in shock. He grasped my hand and said, "I forgot about our agreement, Alex. I'm sorry." I shook my head and uttered, "Some friends you guys are." Trisha groaned and said, "Why are you apologizing, Andrew? Alex is a big boy. He can handle himself." Liam grabbed my arm and said, "Can I talk to you outside, Alex?"

My eyes fell on Cain while I was walking to the door. He was having lunch with Clifford. He waved at me when he noticed me. I waved back and walked out of the cafeteria. Liam led me to a quiet place. He crossed his arms and asked, "What's going on between you and Cain, Alex?" I huffed and uttered, "Nothing is going on between us, and why are you asking me this question?" Liam ran his fingers through his hair and replied, "Arthur has asked me to gather information about Cain's likes and dislikes. He wants to confess to him at Trisha's party. I saw you two this morning. I'm sorry. I just wanted to warn you. That's all."

I chuckled and stated, "Arthur never learns. He thinks he's God's gift to the world. I can't wait to see him fail." Liam sighed and said, "I have come to hate him too. He is such a self-centered prick." I didn't tell Liam that Arthur had been stalking me. It was my burden to bear. My eyes started following Cain from that day on. I noticed he was eating alone on Friday. Clifford was probably preparing for the upcoming football match. I grabbed my tray and made my way to Cain. Cain smiled when I approached him. He placed an apple on my tray and asked, "Will you be at the football match tonight?" I hadn't planned on going, so I replied, "No, and you?"

Cain sighed and said, "Cliff begged me to come. I would rather stay at home and sleep. I have been rather busy." My heart skipped when Cain grabbed my hand and stated, "Hey, let's go on a date tonight." I chuckled and asked, "What about your sleep then?" Cain smirked and replied, "I can always do that on your lap." I pinched Cain's cheek and uttered, "You are terrible at this." Cain scowled and asked, "And you have experience, Alex?" I sighed and answered, "I tried dating before. All my relationships got ruined by my arch nemesis." Cain laughed and stated, "By Arthur, you mean." I wondered how much Cain knew. I contemplated and said, "Alright. Come by my house at eight. Keep in mind, it's not a date." Cain smiled broadly at me. Lunchtime was almost over, so we parted ways.

My parents left the house at six pm. It was my uncle's birthday. They wanted to surprise him with a cake. I had just finished my homework when Cain called me. He had already arrived. I welcomed him into the house and declared, "I lost track of time. Can you wait a minute? I have already showered. I need a few minutes to get dressed." Cain followed me to my room. He looked around and said, "It's neat and tidy like I expected." I offered Cain a drink, but he declined. I grabbed my clothes and walked into the bathroom.

Cain was fast asleep when I returned. He wouldn't wake up, no matter what I did. I was about to give up when the guy grasped my hand and pulled me towards him. I fell on top of Cain. Cain grabbed my face and gazed into my eyes. A shiver ran down my spine when Cain's eye color changed. I frowned when Cain whispered, "My mate." I was about to push the guy away when he fell asleep again. I felt sparks throughout my body. I asked myself what the hell was going on.
