Cain's P.O.V

The court was in session by the time I returned. One of Alex's men guided me to my seat. My mother sobbed throughout the whole trial. Maverick glared at me every time the prosecutor presented some evidence. He blamed me for my mother's sorry state. I tried to ignore him. We were in the courtroom till late. The judge took a break and then came back with the verdict. Alex had already told me he wanted to hurry up the process. My mother gasped when the judge uttered, "Mrs. Barrett will spend seven years in jail for the crimes she has committed." My father lost his mind. He growled and yelled, "That's not fair!"

Maverick tried to calm my father down. I was satisfied with the verdict. I had missed a whole day of work and wanted to leave. I frowned when my mother said, "I want to talk to Cain. You can take me away after that." I was curious about what my mother wanted to say. I smirked and uttered, "It's alright. I'm willing to listen to her." My mother ran toward me and uttered, "I know I have no right to request this, but I don't trust anyone else. Your father can't take care of Ethan anymore, Cain. He is old and helpless. Can you take the child under your wings? Just see it as doing me a favor for giving birth to you."

I growled and uttered, "You will never change, mother. Don't try to manipulate me. You probably knew the child wasn't Aidan's, but you still got attached to him. I'm sorry, I can't take the child. Ask Maverick to do it." My mother clutched her hair and yelled, "You think I didn't ask him first! Maverick doesn't want people to think Ethan is his illegitimate child." I huffed and uttered, "Some alpha king he is." My mother tried to grab my arm. An enforcer pushed her back and stated, "It's time to leave, ma'am." My mother winced and yelled, "I beg of you, Cain. Ethan is innocent. He doesn't deserve this."

I rubbed my forehead while contemplating. I could hardly spend time with Adriel. I didn't need more burdens. I approached my father and said, "I will provide you with everything. Take the child and go live with Maverick. I'll buy you a house if he doesn't want you there. I can't even look after my child, so how will I raise someone else's?" My father rubbed his face and replied, "I'm sorry to disappoint you, Cain. I don't have the strength to take the boy." I was getting frustrated. Alex was busy. I decided to leave before I lost my temper.

I went straight to my office. I buried myself in work to forget the matter. I was surprised when I saw that it was already eight p.m. I hadn't had dinner yet. I smiled when Alex hugged me from behind. Alex kissed my cheek and said, "Your problems won't go away, no matter how hard you try to forget them." I leaned back in my chair and pulled Alex on my lap. Alex groaned when he fell on my lap. He glared at me and said, "We are not eighteen anymore, Cain." I cupped Alex's face and kissed him passionately. Alex pushed me when he became breathless. He threw his arms around my neck and uttered, "I know what you are going through, Cain. Take a deep breath and think calmly. You will find a solution. I promise."

I kissed Alex's neck and stated, "I know what to do. I will put Ethan in an orphanage for now. He can go to a private boarding school when he reaches seven." Alex gazed into my eyes and said, "I respect your decision. Let's leave. My parents must be having dinner with the kids." We went to Alex's house. Adriel was telling his grandfather how much he wanted to go fishing. He jumped off his chair when he saw me. I hugged my son and asked, "How was your day, Adriel?" Adriel began giving me a report of his fun-filled day. Ethan quietly ate his food. I sighed while looking at the child. I could see that he was stopping himself from crying. I didn't even realize I was staring at the child. Alex grabbed my hand and asked, "Is everything alright?" I nodded and replied, "Yes. Go back to eating."

Alex's parents went to bathe the kids after dinner. I decided to enjoy a glass of whiskey by the fireplace. Alex rubbed my back and asked, "Are you staying over?" I gazed at the flames and answered, "Yes. I don't want to be alone tonight." I couldn't understand why I felt so guilty. Ethan wasn't my child. Alex kissed my cheek and stated, "I'm going to shower. Join me when you are ready." I finished my drink and went upstairs. The house was quiet. I didn't even realize that a long time had passed. Adriel's room was open. I decided to check on him. The little boy was sleeping peacefully. Ethan was lying next to him. The omega looked like a toddler next to Adriel.

I was startled when Alex's mother said, "Oh! I didn't realize you were here, Cain. I'll come back later." I smiled and uttered, "You can stay. You came to check on them, right?" Alex's mother gazed at the boys and uttered, "They look beautiful together. Adriel will be sad when Ethan leaves tomorrow." Ethan was wearing pajamas with cupcakes on them. His stomach was showing. I fixed Ethan's clothes and asked, "Did you guys buy clothes for the boy?" Alex's mother chuckled and replied, "No, they were Adriel's. The boy didn't even wear it once. He found it ugly. Look how cute it looks on Ethan." I kissed Adriel's head and said, "Thank you for looking after the kids. I'm going to bed now. Good night." Alex's mother nodded and uttered, "Good night."

Alex was going through some papers when I walked into the room. He smiled at me and said, "Aidan's trail is coming up. Do you want to attend it?" I was flying to Miami in a few days. I would be busy preparing for my trip, so I replied, "No, I don't have time. Tell me how it went." Alex put the papers away and climbed into bed. Alex had already prepared clothes for me. I grabbed a fresh towel and walked into the bathroom. Alex was lying awake when I finished showering. He was staring at the ceiling. I kissed Alex's temple and uttered, "A penny for your thoughts." Alex was about to reply to me when I heard a child scream.

Alex and I ran to Adriel's room. Adriel was looking at Ethan in shock. The omega wouldn't stop shaking. Alex grabbed Adriel and said, "It's alright, darling. Ethan had a nightmare. Your dad will calm him down. Why don't you sleep with Grandma and Grandpa tonight." I picked up Ethan and tried to soothe him. The boy kept wailing. It was like he was in pain. Adriel rubbed Ethan's back and asked, "Are you sure, Papa?" I kissed Adriel's cheek and uttered, "Listen to your father, son. Ethan will be alright." Alex's parents had heard the commotion. They came to check on the boys. Alex handed Adriel to his father and said, "We will see you guys in the morning, Dad." Alex's father nodded and left the room with his wife and Adriel.

I hugged Ethan and asked, "What's wrong, Ethan?" Ethan kept crying. A shiver ran down my spine when he began coughing and vomiting. Alex quickly grabbed a bucket. He took a wet towel and wiped Ethan's face. The boy clutched my shirt and cried, "I want Grandma!" I froze up when I felt the boy's pain. Alex threw his arm around me and said, "The child's wolf is uncertain about his future, Cain. He feels unwanted. The poor child is suffering because of other people." I lost my mind when Ethan declared, "Nobody ever wanted me. Grandma loves me with her whole heart. I want to see her." I cupped Ethan's face and uttered, "Your grandma is in jail, Ethan. You have to learn to live without her."

Ethan clenched his fists and screamed, "No!" He tried to wiggle out of my arms. I held Ethan tightly and tried to communicate with his wolf. Ethan's white wolf whimpered when he sensed me. I smiled and stated, "Hello, Saige. Alex and I will be your parents from now on. Forget your grandmother and live a happy life with us." I sighed in relief when the wolf bowed his head. Ethan calmed down immediately. Alex chuckled when the boy fell asleep. He smirked and uttered, "You could have avoided this ordeal."

I kissed Alex and replied, "I'm sorry. I should have listened to you. I'll make it up to Ethan." Alex wiped Ethan's body with a wet towel and put him to bed. We returned to our room after that. It was soon morning. I smiled when Adriel and Ethan ran into our room while giggling. The boy had cheered up completely. Alex laughed and declared, "There will never be a dull day in this house."
