Alex's P.O.V
I sat at my desk and gazed at Cain. I asked myself if the guy had lost a bet or something. It felt like Cain was trying to woo me against his will. I shook my head when I remembered Cain wasn't a bad guy. It was eleven pm, and the guy was still asleep. I groaned when someone rang our doorbell like a maniac. My parents were already at home. They went to bed after checking up on me. I ran downstairs to open the door. Ian Fricks and Stuart Pine were at the door. They were Cain's bodyguards. I saw them lurking in the shadows.
Ian glared at me and asked, "Where is Cain?" I huffed and replied, "He's sleeping. Are you guys here to change his diapers?" Stuart pushed me aside and said, "Don't get smart with us. Maverick is worried about him." I was about to kick Stuart out when Cain growled, "Get out!" Stuart winced, bowed, and uttered, "I'm sorry to disturb you, sir. Your brother asked us to check where you were." Cain scowled and stated, "Leave. I have already contacted my brother." Stuart gazed at Ian, then walked out of the house.
I sighed and uttered, "You better leave as well, Cain. I'm tired and can't think straight. I don't want to say things I'll regret later." Cain cupped my face and said, "I shouldn't have fallen asleep. I'm sorry. I was looking forward to spending time with you." I grabbed Cain's hand and stated, "I can't talk about this right now." Cain stared at his shoes. My father coughed suddenly. I didn't want to alarm him. I grasped Cain's hand and dragged him upstairs. I pushed Cain against the door and asked, "What do you want from me, Cain, and why do you keep calling me, "My mate?"
Cain gasped and asked, "Did I scare you, Alex?" I clutched my hair and yelled, "Get to the point, Cain! It's late. I want to sleep." Cain led me to the bed and said, "Let's sit. I'll explain things to you." Cain told me how his wolf awakened when he touched me. I wouldn't have believed him If I wasn't an elf descendant. I sighed and declared, "I'm not your mate, Cain. My parents have kept this a secret for years, but I'm an elf. We bring good fortune to people, so they want to exploit us. My father told me when I was young that your wolf was lying dormant. He could see your ancient wolf. I'm sorry. I'm sure you will meet your mate when the time comes."
Cain stood up and said, "You are wrong, and I'll prove it to you." I was startled when Cain grabbed my face and kissed me passionately. I felt sparks throughout my body. Cain kissed my temple and uttered, "Don't tell me you didn't feel anything just now, Alex." I didn't know what I felt. I sighed and replied, "I have experienced too many heartbreaks to believe you, Cain. Give me some time to process things." Cain kissed me softly and said, "Take all the time you need, Alex. Promise me you won't get angry if I come looking for you every day."
I gazed into Cain's eyes. His wolf could be wrong. I decided to test the waters. Cain and I agreed to meet each other Sunday afternoon. I couldn't sleep after he left. I woke up late the next day. My parents were relaxing on the porch when I came downstairs for breakfast. I grabbed my food and joined them. My mother ruffled my hair and said, "You had a rough night, huh?" I nodded while enjoying a bagel. My father put his cup down and uttered, "Rejoice, Alex. I found a buyer. She is willing to take over the business after your graduation. Isn't that good?" How am I going to explain this to Cain? I thought.
I was lost in my thoughts and didn't realize my father was staring at me. My father grabbed my shoulder and asked, "Why the long face, son?" I took a deep breath and uttered, "Cain is sure I'm his mate, Dad. That is why he was here last night." My mother almost choked on coffee. She wiped her mouth and said, "That can't be true, Alex. You were born mateless. That is why we let you chase after Arthur." I sighed and stated, "Well, Cain's ancient wolf is convinced I'm his other half. I have to go along with it for now." My father looked worried. My mother stroked his back to console him. My heart skipped when my father said, "I hope you know what you are doing, Alex. The Barret family is dangerous. They won't forgive you for playing with Cain's heart."
My father was right. I was playing with fire, but it was the only way to change Cain's mind. My mother smiled and said, "It's alright. Cain will be turning eighteen in a month. I'm sure he'll meet his lovely mate then." I truly hoped my mother was right. I took a nap after breakfast. It was soon time for me to meet Cain. I drove my mother's Van to the pack's training grounds in the afternoon. Maverick spotted me first. He jogged toward my car. I stepped out of the car and uttered, "Good afternoon, alpha Maverick." Maverick smirked and said, "It's good to see you, Alex. Are you here to meet my brother." I nodded and replied, "Yes. Is he around? We agreed to have lunch together."
Ian suddenly tackled me to the ground. My clothes got dirty. Maverick laughed at my sorry state. My hands were itching to attack the bastard. Cain appeared before I could react. He helped me stand and yelled, "What the hell are you guys doing?" Maverick offered me a towel and said, "I'm sorry, Cain. We were testing how sturdy Alex is. He should be able to protect you, at least. You don't mind, do you, Alex? It's not the first we are roughhousing." I wanted to retort but stopped when I heard people laugh. We lived in a supernatural world with all kinds of races. Humans were low on the totem pole. It was best to stay quiet.
I smiled at Cain and said, "You are busy. I'll leave now. We will see each other tomorrow." Cain tried to stop me. I ignored his pleas and stepped into my car. I took a shower when I reached home. Cain called me at seven pm. He sighed and uttered, "Maverick is such an ass. He shouldn't have messed with you, Alex. We fought after you left. He told me he was playing around and that you are used to it. He'll think twice before attacking you next time." I laughed and stated, "I have already forgotten about it, Cain. Let's talk about something else." Cain and I discussed matters regarding school.
I went straight to bed after dinner. Cain picked me up early in the morning. He handed me a Starbucks latte and kissed my cheek. I chuckled and said, "I could get used to this." I felt guilty when Cain laced his fingers through mine. We soon arrived at school. Cain and I grabbed our bags and walked to our class. Clifford had already arrived. He was playing a game on his phone. Cliff was startled when Cain grabbed his shoulder. I ignored the two and walked to my seat.
The class was soon over. Cain grasped my hand while I was passing by. I smiled at him and said, "I'll see you after school." I dragged my feet to my last class of the day. I was surprised to see that the place was empty. I grabbed my phone to see if the class got canceled. I groaned when I read that the teacher was absent. I suddenly heard noises. They were coming from the back of the class. I winced when someone moaned.
I was about to leave when Arthur said, "Don't be rough, Dimitri." I couldn't believe my ears. Arthur had said he would never sleep with a guy. Oh, how had times changed, I thought. I couldn't help but laugh. Arthur looked at me in shock. I smirked and uttered, "Ow, don't mind me. Let the vampire show you a good time." I left before Arthur could retort. I couldn't contain my laughter while walking to the exit.
