Chapter 24. Sorrow

Alexander's P.O.V

I was on my way to meet Cain when I sensed danger. It seemed like the Barrett family was at it again. I contemplated what to do. I could do more harm than good by interfering. I sighed when I heard Theon's voice. He was pleading with me to help him. I masked my presence and made my way to the hospital. Cain looked lost and confused. I hugged Cain when I sensed his pain. The guy was fighting the demon Aidan had unleashed on him. I grabbed the demon by the neck and crushed his skull. I knew where the demon came from. Aidan was going to pay for smuggling such a powerful creature.

People were starting to notice Cain. I decided to take him to a secluded beach. I sighed in relief when Cain uttered, "I can finally breathe in peace." Theon bowed and declared, "Thank you, my mate." I kissed Cain's forehead and stated, "You are welcome." Cain looked at me in shock. He touched his forehead and began crying. I frowned and asked, "What's wrong now?" Cain hugged me tightly and replied, "I remember everything. I can even recall how you looked when I first saw you. I was such a jerk to you, Alex. Please, punch me as many times as you like." I chuckled and said, "It's alright. You will forget about me soon."

I laughed when Cain grabbed my hand and uttered, "No, I won't. You can't imagine what I went through without you." Cain clutched his hair and yelled, "No! I missed six years of my child's life. I'm a despicable man!" Cain's nose suddenly began bleeding. The guy was condemning himself. I grabbed my handkerchief to wipe Cain's nose. The guy grabbed my hand and uttered, "I deserve what's coming to me. Leave it." I groaned when Cain began walking toward the water. I hugged Cain from behind and asked, "Where are you going?" Cain leaned against my chest and replied, "I keep seeing the scene where I walked by you and proposed to that wretch. I can't take it anymore."

I kissed Cain's neck and uttered, "It wasn't your fault, Cain. Calm down." Cain shook his head and stated, "The guilt is eating me alive, Alex. I need to do something about it." I sighed and said, "Let's go. I need to wash away my sins as well." I grabbed Cain's hand and walked into the sea with him. Cain closed his eyes when the water engulfed him. I felt sorry for the guy. I hugged Cain and said, "We will get through this together." Cain began crying again. I cupped Cain's face and kissed him passionately. Cain looked in a daze at me. I chuckled and asked, "Are you feeling better?" Cain kissed me back and answered, "Now I do." The water was cold. We looked like two lovelorn fools. I dragged Cain out of the water and said, "That's enough wallowing in self-pity."

Cain checked our surroundings and asked, "Where are we?" I smiled sheepishly and answered, "We are in Mallorca. It's always peaceful at this beach. We sadly have to leave now. Your men are looking for you." Cain smiled when I dried our clothes with a spell. He kissed my cheek and asked, "Can I see Adriel?" I looked at my watch and replied, "He's sleeping. I don't want to disturb him." Cain gazed at the waves and said, "I understand. I won't say a word. I'll watch him from afar." I sighed while thinking about the situation.

Cain knelt before me and pleaded. I pulled him up and uttered, "Stop acting like a fool. Come on, let's go." I took Cain to Adriel's room. The boy was sleeping peacefully. Cain smiled and declared, "Adriel is beautiful. Theon still remembers your promise to us. Thank you for being such a good father to our child, my mate." I thought the beautiful moments we had shared were lost, but I was mistaken. Cain had remembered every little detail of our lives together.

I led Cain to my room and said, "I have something for you." Cain's eyes widened in surprise when I handed him a stack of photo albums. He grabbed the first one and asked, "You managed to capture all the significant moments of our child's life, Alex?" I chuckled and replied, "Yes, photos of all the six years are there. I didn't do it alone. My parents helped me. I never forgave them for splitting us up." Cain kissed me deeply and said, "I have to devise a plan to deal with my family. How could they do this to us? And don't worry about your uncle's curse. We will tackle that problem in due time as well."

I sighed and asked, "You remember what I told you before your coming-of-age ceremony?" Cain nodded and replied, "I won't lose my memories again. I promise." I ran my fingers through my hair and uttered, "It looks like you have forgotten what happened at the hospital. You will keep forgetting things until I kill the mastermind, Cain. All this will mean nothing to you tomorrow."

Cain gazed into my eyes and said, "Oh, that won't happen. Theon recovered when we kissed. Nothing can harm me now. My parents don't know this, but I have been training hard. Compared to Maverick, I'm more powerful." I shook my head and yelled, "Try to understand what I'm saying, Cain, and why are you so sure of yourself?" Cain bit my ear and replied, "It's because your mark is glowing. It's assuring me that everything will be alright." "Why am I wasting my energy when Cain will forget things soon?" I thought. I watched Cain go through the photo albums. I had asked my assistant to notify Flynn that the President was safe. Cain took a photo of Adriel out of the album and asked, "Can I have this?" I nodded and answered, "Yeah. I have another copy of it somewhere."

Cain put the picture in his pocket and said, "I'm so glad you came to my aid, Alex. Now that I know everything, I want to be with you." I decided to indulge Cain. I kissed Cain passionately and stated, "Okay, let's meet each other every day from now on. You have gained power, yes? Why don't you come to see me when you need me." Cain laughed and uttered, "It's a deal." Cain visited Adriel's room after checking the albums. He kissed me intensely and said before he left, "I'll see you tomorrow, Alex. I'll stay away from my family for now. I want to gather information about the attacks before confronting them."

I was missing Cain already. I slapped myself and uttered, "Snap out of it. He won't remember you tomorrow." I went to my office to handle matters. I couldn't sleep that night. I left for work early the next day. We had caught some rogue werewolves. We hadn't questioned them yet. I was busy observing the culprits when Cain appeared. I looked in shock at Cain when he asked, "Are they the ones who attacked the Rose Wood pack? Maverick was complaining about it." I frowned and uttered, "That's none of your concern, Mr. President. What are you doing here?"

Cain kissed my cheek and said, "I came to see you as promised. You look good today, Alex. Can I come by your house tonight? I want to play with Adriel." I grabbed Cain's collar and asked, "Are you playing with me? How can you still remember me?" Cain kissed me passionately and answered, "I broke the spell last night. I'm finally free." I asked myself if I was dreaming. I decided to be careful because good things never last.
