Chapter 17. Shock

Alexander's P.O.V

I drove home with a heavy heart that night. My parents were waiting for me in the living room. I was still angry, so I ignored them. I went straight to my room. I tried to find information about my uncle's family. I wanted to break the curse as soon as possible. It was the only way to save my bond with Cain. There was no clue about the murderer. I could only find gruesome photos of the crime scene. It was almost morning. I was startled when my uncle said, "You are wasting your time. I would have avenged my family ages ago if it was this easy."

I huffed and replied, "Leave me alone. I have work to do." My uncle laughed and stated, "Foolish, child. What are you going to do next? Are you going to use your clairvoyant abilities to perceive the past? Go ahead. Try it." I closed my eyes and tried to sense who had killed my uncle's family. My brain swelled up, and I got a nosebleed. My uncle patted my back and said, "They have a mighty sorcerer on their side. I admire your efforts, but you are not strong enough to face the enemy yet, Alex." Things weren't going my way. My uncle's taunts had started to irritate me. My uncle disappeared when I threatened to burn him alive.

I fell asleep after a shower. I smiled when Cain stroked my head. I grabbed Cain's hand and uttered, "Your cold hand feels so nice." Cain chuckled and stated, "Good morning, Alex. I see you had a rough night as well." I quickly pulled Cain into my arms. I thought I was dreaming. Cain patted my back and uttered, "I'm happy to see you too, Alex, but I can't stay long. I had to climb through the window to avoid your parents." I suddenly noticed the bouquet Cain was holding. Cain handed me the flowers and said, "It's for standing you up last night." I kissed Cain's cheek and said, "Thank you. You don't know how much it means to me."

Cain smirked and grabbed an envelope out of his pocket. He grasped my hand and stated, "It's what you have been waiting for, Alex. We will finally be together." I gazed at the expensive invitation card and said, "I need to tell you something, Cain. It's better if I show it to you. Please understand that it's up to you now." Cain frowned when I showed him what had happened between my uncle and me. He hugged me tightly and declared, "Don't worry, babe. I'll choose you no matter what." I thought that Cain would be shocked. I was glad that he was handling things well. Cain kissed me passionately and uttered, "I love you, Alex. I'll see you at the party tonight. Don't be late." Cain waved at me, then jumped out of the window.

I caressed my lips after Cain left. I wondered why it felt like the last kiss we would ever have. I still tried to find a solution. My mother barged into my room when I didn't eat. She scanned my messy room and yelled, "Are you trying to starve to death, Alex?" I ignored my mother and grabbed my car key. My mother huffed and asked, "Where are you going? You haven't eaten anything since yesterday." I glared at my mother and said, "Sorry, mother. I don't have an appetite." I drove to the supermarket to buy a drink. I had forgotten that the omega worked there. I winced when I saw him at the entrance. He was having pizza with one of his colleagues. I was happy that he didn't notice me. I frowned when Aidan's friend said, "You have received an invitation to the party of the year, right? Didn't Cain invite you himself? You are a lucky guy. You are surely going."

Aidan blushed and nodded. I had sensed the attraction between Cain and Aidan. I was now sure that Aidan had a crush on Cain. I didn't feel like going home. I spent time at the park. I went home at eight to get ready for the party. My father blocked the door when I tried to leave. He grabbed my hand and said, "Please don't go there, son." I sighed and said, "Cain came to see me today, Father. He said everything will be alright, and I believe him." It felt like I was lying to myself, but I would die before I let my father sense my despair. I knew the guards wouldn't let me through, so I used my secret path to get in.

My eyes fell on Arthur and the gang when I walked into the venue. Mrs. Barrett had invited the whole school except for me. People instantly started gossiping about me. They were hoping I would get rejected. I tried to sense where Cain was when I couldn't find him anywhere. I growled when I saw him talking to Aidan by the pool. Cain didn't even notice me standing behind him. He was startled when I grabbed his shoulder. Cain hugged me and said, "I'm glad you are here, Alex. I was getting bored." I gazed at Aidan and uttered, "It doesn't look like it." Cain threw his arm around me and asked, "Did you say something, babe?" I fixed Cain's bowtie and replied, "No. You look good tonight." Cain chuckled and replied, "It's my mother's pick." Cain excused himself when someone called out to him.

I was about to confront Aidan when Maverick pushed me. I huffed and yelled, "What the hell is your problem, Maverick?" Maverick grabbed my collar and uttered, "I'm your alpha. Show some respect." I laughed and asked, "Would you like to know your future, alpha? It's not pretty, I can tell you that." Aidan had disappeared. I couldn't blame him. Maverick was acting like a dick. The alpha let me go when Elder Ezra appeared. It was time for the rituals to start. People avoided me like the plague. It was soon time for the big reveal. Cain would find his mate when the clock struck twelve. Elder Ezra led Cain to the middle of the venue.

Cain looked at me expectantly. Elder Ezra ordered Cain to close his eyes. Everyone went quiet when Cain opened his eyes again. It was already midnight. Cain grabbed a velvet box out of his pocket and walked toward me. I couldn't wait to accept Cain's proposal. My heart shattered when Cain walked past me in a daze and knelt before Aidan. Cain opened the velvet box and said, "Please, marry me, my mate." All eyes were on me instead of the happy couple. I felt a sharp pain in my stomach when all the guests began laughing. Someone even yelled, "I bet Alex will be chasing you again, Arthur. Prepare yourself, man. Thousand is going to get you!"

I lost all my energy when I saw how happy Cain's family was. I fell to my knees. I could take the humiliation but not the rejection. Cain turned to see what the racket was about. Aidan grabbed Cain's face and tried to kiss him. I had seen enough. I clutched my stomach and uttered, "I'm going to destroy you all." I couldn't take the pain anymore and began crying. I winced when my parents helped me up. My mother stroked my head and said, "You can't be here, son. Let's go." I lost consciousness when I reached the car. I was lying in my bed when I woke up. My mother kissed my forehead and asked, "How are you feeling, Alex?" I sat up and replied, "Like I got hit by a bus." My father scowled and asked, "Did you know you were pregnant?"

I laughed and uttered, "You must be joking, Father. Why would I want to carry that traitor's child?" My mother sighed and stated, "Your uncle examined you, Alex. You are two months pregnant." My father growled and yelled, "Pack your bags. We are leaving!" I changed my form and growled, "I'm not going anywhere. It would be stupid to finish my last semester at another school." My mother began sobbing. She wiped her tears away and asked, "What about people's taunts? And what are you going to do about the child?" I sighed when I realized the child wanted to live.

I stroked my stomach and replied, "I don't care about Cain anymore. I'll have the child and give it up for adoption. I'll find a way to hide my pregnancy. Don't worry." My father slammed his fist on my nightstand and yelled, "Don't you understand what will be waiting for you on Monday? They will eat you alive!" I grabbed my blanket and uttered, "I don't care. You people are the cause of this. You will suffer with me. Now, leave. I have a headache." How could I leave when I had a bone to pick with everyone?
