Cain's P.O.V
My mother took me to a high-brand suit shop when I got home. I didn't see Alex for the rest of the day again. The head elder forced me to go through training for my coming-of-age ceremony. I got tired of it after a while. My mother kept urging me to invite people personally. She didn't want me to visit the Haile family. I couldn't understand why she was against my bond. She used to adore Alex. I worked hard to keep my weekend free. I lost my mind when my mother told me about that weekend's family dinner.
I walked out of the room while she was explaining things to me. I bumped into Maverick on my way to my gym. Maverick ruffled my hair and asked, "Why does it look like you're about to kill someone, Cain?" I huffed and replied, "Mom is getting on my nerves. She didn't act this crazy when you turned eighteen." Maverick laughed and answered, "That's because Amal's mother is her best friend." I sighed and said, "It's good I ran into you. I wanted to talk to you about something." Maverick led me to his office. He sat on his desk and uttered, "Go ahead." I took a deep breath and declared, "I slept with Alex."
Maverick gasped and asked, "Are you nuts? What if your feelings are false?" I glared at my brother and growled, "Stop overacting. I know what I'm doing." Maverick shook his head and stated, "It looks like you couldn't satisfy him. Would you like some pointers?" I kicked Maverick and uttered, "Behave yourself. Something happened when we had sex last time. I wanted to ask you about that." Maverick looked at me in shock. He composed himself when he sensed how troubled I was.
Maverick sighed and uttered, "Okay. What would you like to know?" I told Maverick about how Alex's mark had disappeared. Maverick rubbed his chin, then said, "I'm sorry to say this, my brother, but it looks like Alex is not your mate." I clutched my hair and yelled, "Not this again!" Maverick rubbed my back and said, "Listen to me, Cain. The mark wouldn't have disappeared if your bond was strong. It looks like something is wrong with Alex. Talk to him. He shouldn't string you along if he isn't serious." I couldn't think straight. It was too late to meet Alex. I trained till I couldn't stand anymore. I loved Alex too much to give up on him.
I attended meetings with my father on Saturday. I didn't get a chance to talk to Alex the whole day. It was almost dinner time when we returned to the mansion. Elder Ezra and our other family members had already arrived. I sent a text to Alex and got ready for dinner. I winced when Elder Ezra said, "I met Ivan and Anna Haile today. They told me they didn't get invited to the party. Is there a reason behind this, Natalia?" I clenched my fists when my mother uttered, "Oh, no, Elder. The invitation must have gotten lost in the mail." Theon sensed that my mother wasn't lying. I got up and declared before leaving, "This is why I wanted to invite them personally, Mother." I didn't care about anyone anymore. I grabbed my car key and left the house.
I texted Alex to ask him where he was. He wrote me instantly. Alex was at the park with some friends. I got thirsty on my way to the location. I stopped at a supermarket to buy drinks for Alex and me. A guy was busy stacking beverages. He didn't even see me standing behind him. The guy bumped his head against the rack when I uttered, "Excuse me. Can you move aside a little?" I felt sorry for the guy. I grabbed his arm and said, "Be careful. Let me help you up." My eyes widened in surprise when I saw how cute the guy was. I hadn't seen him before. I let the guy go and quickly grabbed my drinks. The guy tapped my shoulder and said, "Thank you. You look good tonight." Only then did I realize I had forgotten to change. I nodded and walked away.
My eyes fell on Arthur when I reached the park. Alex was sitting at another table with some guys. He smiled when he noticed me. I couldn't understand why Alex was still mingling with his awful friends. I locked my car and motioned Alex to follow me. We walked hand in hand to a secluded area. Alex kissed my cheek when we found a bench and declared, "It seems like the family dinner didn't go well." I sighed and replied, "Well, you know my mother." Alex sat down and replied, "Oh, yeah. I certainly do. She canceled our contract last week." I huffed and growled, "What's wrong with her?" Alex laughed and replied, "It's alright. We got all we need."
Alex and I enjoyed our drinks together. I caught Alex staring in the distance. It was like he had discovered someone or something. I scanned our surroundings, but I didn't find anything. I stroked Alex's head and asked, "What's wrong?" Alex shook his head and replied, "It's nothing." Alex was hiding things from me again. Maverick's words flashed through my mind suddenly. Alex frowned when I asked, "Why are you still hanging around with those people, Alex? You were sitting with them at the event as well."
Alex gazed into my eyes and replied, "I got roped into carrying equipment by the committee last time. The event started when I was about to leave, and the venue was full of people. I couldn't find another seat. I didn't have any other choice than to sit with them. And tonight. I was jogging when I met Ron. We were training together when the others arrived. I didn't want to ruin my mood, so I stayed. I don't like the torture as much as you think. You are not in good spirits tonight, so let's leave it at that."
Alex threw the empty bottles away and said, "And by the way. The omega you met before left his scent on you. It has ruined my night. I hope you will be careful next time." I grabbed Alex's hand and uttered, "I'm sorry. My family has been saying things lately. The whole thing is making me doubt myself. I promise you my love for you is genuine." Alex cupped my face and uttered, "I know. Thank you for sticking up for me." I went home after spending time with Alex. I frowned when I saw the picture on my bed. I growled when I recognized the guy as the omega I had met at the shop before. My mother had found another potential partner for me, it seemed.
