Aurelia Hale. FINALLY quit her job. The place she met her best friend - Alexan Carter, gender-fluid talent extraordinaire. Well, talented in all ways but one.

As the two of them left the office building for good, Alexan whooped and shouted in excitement.

"Goodbye ya hell hole! Good riddance!" they cheered, green hair wild as they hopped around her.

Aurelia laughed, trying to dodge their erratic dancing. "Alex! You're gonna make me drop my things."

"It's your fault for turning your office into a hanging garden. How do you keep plants alive so well Ray?!" they asked incredulously.

The brunette shrugged. "All I know is that gran's place is huge! Think of all the plants I can get!"

"Ha. Yeah." They put an arm around her shoulders. "Question though: how are you going to care for twenty acres of land?"

She put on her best doe eyed smile. "With help from my best friend~"

"Right," they deadpanned. "Come on, let's get all of Babylon's plants into the trunk."

Together they got into the car, and Aurelia put the top down. The sun warmed their artificially-air conditioned skin.

A few hours later, they arrived at the Hale estate. A beautiful mansion settled in a grove of thick greenery. The garden around the house was still well-maintained.

"Wow, this is incredible," she gasped.

"No kidding. Think of the weekend parties you could throw here. Ray, you could rent this place out for weddings!"

She laughed at the spark in her friend's amber eyes. "Always a way to make a buck, huh."

They got out of the car, and Aurelia grabbed a box from the back. They wandered a little ways down the garden path, bird song and warm, fading light guiding them.

As they rounded the corner, the setting sun illuminated a magnificent old tree in the garden. It looked to be a century older than the surrounding forest trees, rising strong and tall into the blazing sky.

Both were too stunned by the ethereal scene to speak.

But as they drew closer, the glow of sunset increased. Within moments it was blinding...

"...Alex?!"

And they were falling.
