Two men left the rooms the same time.

King Baltazar's eyes darkened at the sight of King Kaidan in much the same way that Maxim's expression turned complex upon seeing Veronica.

The maid moved out of the king's way, but Maxim didn't. An electric tension sparked between the pair that had hardly acknowledged one another before.

Maxim's voice was low as he growled, "What's a dark elf king want with a human?"

The king raised a brow. "What does a drahke want with a human?" Those aureolin eyes flicked to the red fluff of the maid's hair and tail. "And how does Velaan train its servants? To be romantic companions for every guest?"

Kaidan scowled and moved in front of Veronica.

Baltazar scoffed as no rebuttal was made, wasting no further time as he turned down the hall.

Not far along, he ran into Lady Liryn.

Her ears flicked with uncertainty at the sight of him, which she tried to hide as she curtseyed. "King-"

"Even this fool of a king knows not to keep me from what I want."

She rose up, eyes wide as he approached with an intimidating air. "What are you-"

"The human. You had your chance to indulge your interest, but that time is over. She is mine." Just before he turned to go, he reiterated in a growl no less threatening than the drahke's had been a minute before. "Know your place."
