Kali didn't have time to go back to sleep, for when she got to her room her friend Carla was awake already. She lifted an eyebrow as soon as the girl entered the room.
"Young lady, where have you been?" She had a fake worried expression on her face, but a smile wanted to break through.
Kali was still scared, she jumped back when she saw her. "Drinking some tea." The lie rolled off her tongue with no reason to.
This seemed to satisfy Carla because she smiled and walked towards her best friend. She put her hands on her shoulders and pulled her towards the vanity that the three roommates shared.
Penelope Mondrich, the third friend of the clan, was currently in a deep slumber. She usually awoke five minutes before class, but somehow made it in time. During these two days they were back, she was acting weirdly. Leaving them alone and being dodgy over where she's going. The three friends told themselves everything, except whatever Penelope was hiding.
Kali didn't really like pounding on some makeup just for class. When she wanted to look better than usual, she put on the whole shabam, but for today some mascara and concealer would do. When she was done putting on lipstick, Clara took her place and did her makeup routine.
Penelope was still sleeping when they went down the common room to eat some breakfast. The halls were now buzzing with students, all hungry and tired. The Great hall always had the best food, and since early birds get the worm, everyone wanted to be the first ones there.
Carla and Kali sat at their usual spot in the Hufflepuff table, grabbing the toasts and eggs they wanted. Once they had some food in their system, they could communicate better.
"I was thinking that this summer you could come stay over." Carla said, remember the last three summers when Kali stayed a month at her estate. "William misses you." William is her ten year old brother who has the biggest crush on Kali.
This makes her laugh, just imagining the boy's pudgy cheeks and blonde hair. She was an only child, so her house was very silent. That's why she enjoyed Carla's, there is always something going on.
"I should reply to the letters he's been sending me." William sent her letter all throughout the break, but since her mental health has been so bleak the weeks following the break up, she didn't answer.
Carla rolled her eyes, embarrassed by the forwardness of her brother. She loved him to death, but he was a lot. "Next year he'll be a menace running around the same corridors as you. You might want to invest in a bodyguard."
"Let's see if he's sorted into Hufflepuff and maybe we won't see him as much." Most of Carla's family was sorted into Hufflepuff, so it would be no surprise that William got into the house as well. "He might be a Sly-" Her words cut off suddenly and her eyes snapped to the people entering the hall.
Simon and Penelope, walking hand in hand as she giggled to something he said. Kali's heart rose into her throat, making her choke a little. Simon's eyes met hers as he approached the pair of friends. Penelope looked at the floor, not making eye contact with either of the girls, she knew this was wrong but Simon approached her and she couldn't hold back.
Kali closed her mouth since it was hanging open while Clara glared at him so hard that he might explode into thin air. Instinctively, Kali grabbed Clara's hand and squeezed, she felt heartbroken and her best friend knew that.
"How was your break, Kali?" He asked just to spite her. It was obvious with the proud glint in his eyes, he was doing this on purpose.
She took a deep breath because she could feel the tears climbing up her throat. "It was good." This was all she could muster out.
Clara, on the other hand, had a rant ready and she wasn't going to hold back. "Real classy, Simon. If you're here to prove that you have balls by waving around your new girlfriend in front of us then you are worse than I thought. And Penelope, what the fuck are you doing?"
He shook his head innocently. "Kali and I dated for years so it's only cordial for me to say hi to her. Plus, I'm sorry if you can't handle seeing me move on and be happy." He pushed his glasses up his nose, a mannerism Kali used to love, but she loathes now.
Kali stayed silent because she didn't know how to respond. It hurt her to see him with a girl, especially with Penelope, who was aware how much this hurt her. The girl still stared at the floor, she couldn't bear to see her best friend hurt and the other angry at her.
Blaise Zabini sat at the Slytherin table, his gaze intently on Kali and her arsehole if an ex. No matter how much he wanted to look away, he couldn't. He could basically see her heart hurting with just the tension in her shoulders. She was a minute away from a breakdown and it was very obvious.
"Damn, Simon moved on fast." Draco mutters from next to him. His white hair shined under the light as he scoffed at the whole interaction in front of him.
Blaise bit his lip, contemplating how to help. "I should do something, right?" He asked, trying to think of options on how to help Kali, but it's not like he could punch Simon in front of the school staff.
Draci looked at him like he was crazy. "You don't know her." He simply stated, like that explained why he shouldn't help the poor girl.
Yet, Blaise's mind was decided and he stood up, his long legs making his stride towards Kali and Simon. He thought of a great plan that would make him lay off her, if she played along. He hoped she'd played along because this was out of both their comfort zone.
He approached them, but nobody noticed him come close until he had his hand on Kali's shoulder. She looked up at him with wide eyes, like she was pleading for help. Without another thought, he leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"Hey, love, sorry I was late," He could feel their gazes on him, but he needed to commit to the bit now. There was no turning back. He looked at Simon like he just noticed him there. "What's up, Chance? Did you forget something here?"
Simon visibly swallowed, his eyes bouncing off Blaise's hand on Kali's shoulder and her forehead where he just kissed her. Penelope stared at them as well, a curious expression on her face. Clara just smirked in Kali's direction in a way that was too suggestive for the time of morning it was.
Simon shook his head and stood straighter, but he would never be as tall as Blaise, even if he wore heels. "Just asking Kali about her break. I'm sorry, what are you doing with her?"
Blaise clicked his tongue like he just remembered something. "I told her I was late to meet her since Draco kept talking my ear off."
Simon motioned between them like he was swatting a fly. "What's going on between you two?" His eyebrows were furrowed and his jaw clenched.
Kali gripped onto Blaise's hand, urging him to say a convincing lie because her dignity couldn't take more hits. "We connected over the summer since she lives so close to me and just sparked something up. Right, love?"
Kali nodded quickly, but paced herself to be believable. "Who knew Blaise could be so caring?" She leaned back towards him a little, his warmth comfortable.
"Are you guys dating now?" This was the first time Penelope spoke up in the whole conversation and it was to ask a stupid question. Clara was ready to rage, but decided against it because the scene in front of her was too interesting to interrupt.
Blaise gave her a coy smile and rubbed a hand on his jaw, like this was too amusing to him. "Yes." He said with no hesitation.
"Oh, yeah!" Clara exclaimed and put a fist towards him to bump. "You are hot, Zabini, and Kali has you all to herself!"
Simon and Penelope were long forgotten as the girls scooted over to give him space to sit. Everyone was looking at him like he was crazy, but he didn't mind. At least the attention was away from Kali, who all but reveled in it.
She leans into him to ask as if she's cuddling into her boyfriend. "What did you just do?"
"I have no idea, but play along." He whispers back and she giggles like he said the funniest thing ever.
Simon, mad that his scheme to embarrass her didn't work, stomped away like a petulant child, pulling Penelope behind him like a dog. He didn't get the satisfaction that he wanted and that burned, especially someone with as many issues as him.
