Once the fresh air hit Kali's face, she felt whatever weighed her down in there just disappear. For some reason, that dress brought out so many nasty emotions she had been holding down for so long, like the ones about her mother.
Kali knew she had to write a letter to her mum about the wedding she was attending, but knowing Ms. Swan, she would try to make her stay home, and she didn't want to.
"Hurry up, Swan." Draco voiced from a few steps ahead of her. "I want some jelly beans."
She scrunched up her nose in disgust, but rushed towards him and Camden since Carla and Blaise were still nowhere to be found. "I hate those disgusting sweets."
"Don't get him started." Camden whispered from his spot next to her, matching her pace when Draco slowed.
The blonde boy gasped at her, putting his hand on his heart. "How dare you?" He actually sounded hurt. "Those are the best candies ever. The fun part is that you never know what you're going to get."
"That's the disgusting part." Kali egged him on, pushing his buttons because his red face was funny.
Draco shook his head, a little more forcefully than he should've, but he still held it open for his friends. "We should play with the jelly beans tonight. Eat a bunch and try not to react." His eyes were filled with mischief.
"Not again, Dray." Camden said, his eyes filled with a trauma way too serious to be talking about candy. "I vomited last time and I can't do that again."
"Don't be a baby. He's being dramatic, Kali." Draco replied, something else caught his attention and he separated from his group to follow it.
Kali and Camden followed him around, holding the candy he wanted while he bent down to check some more. He had a sweet addiction and that was obvious. Good thing he had the riches to fuel this developed vice.
"Okay, Kali, which candy do you want?" Draco asked, his eyes softly looking at his new friend. "My treat."
Kali smiled at him and gave him a little head shake. "There's no need for that." She answered, feeling a bit awkward about wasting his money since Camden already paid for butterbeer.
Dracu rolled his eyes, gesturing at the store. "Come on. Just pick your favorite one."
"You don't need to spend money on me." She spoke, her voice a bit weaker now. "I should pay Camden back for the butterbeers."
Camden scoffed next to her, waving his hand around like he was offended. "Please, love. Not to sound spoiled, but we have money to spare."
Kali looked at them, eyes jumping between the two boys. They had sincerity in their gaze, so she allowed herself to grab some pumpkin pasties and handed them to Draco, who had picked five new sweets while she chose her favorite one.
"Thank you." She said with a small voice, still a bit embarrassed.
Camden noticed this. He usually picked up on people's emotions pretty quick and acted on it fast. There was nothing he hated more than seeing his friends sad, and he liked Kali a lot. Her best friend even more so.
He placed his arm around her shoulder, a small side hug that reassured whatever weird shame she had been feeling. Kali grinned up at him and his gentle expression, his honey-colored eyes smiling down on her.
"Well," A voice she recognized way too well said from behind them. "If it isn't the Slytherin's whore. Seriously, you jump from Blaise to his best friend?"
Both of them turned to the man talking behind them, which was obviously Simon. He stood there looking smug, like he just won a game. His arms were crossed and his sharp glasses were laying perfectly on his nose.
"What did you say?" Camden replied, his voice way too calm for him to be unaffected by the words he heard.
Simon gave her a wicked smile. "I said that after Kali broke up with me, she became a slut." He said like he was talking about the weather.
Kali stared at him for a few seconds, so shocked that he mind was hazy. After years of being at his beck and call, she finally saw him for what he was. A stupid boy that was so insecure he had to hurt people to feel powerful. It made her sick.
"Shut up, Simon." She spoke, her voice harsh like a diamond. "I'm so tired of you always showing up when you aren't needed, so strut along." She shooed him away with her hand like he was a piece of dust.
"You don't get to tell me what to do." He shot back, like an angry child when he got in trouble.
She gave him a coy smile, one that she knew he wouldn't like. "You look pathetic, trying to piss me off."
"You look stupid. You're trying to fit in with these people when you know they'll throw you away when they're done with you." Simon spoke, his eyes flickering to someone behind Kali, which she knew was Draco, who paid for his candy and was standing like a guard dog.
This was a rich statement coming from him. "You did that first and I am beyond the point of caring. They're actually fun, not like you and your aversion to doing something remotely entertaining."
He was about to say something back, but a tall shadow shone down behind him, and it was obvious who it was. Simon twisted his head to see who it was and Blaise looked at him with so much disgust, it looked like Simon was dog shit on Blaise's shoe.
"Do you need anything, Chance?" Blaise asked, having to look down at Simon because he was that tall.
Simon huffed an angry breath and tried to leave the store, but Carla waited for him at the door, her leg conveniently having a spasm as he passed, kicking his knee. He stumbled, his knee buckling under his weight and the hit, but he rushed out of there before she could reach another part of his body.
Once he was away, everyone was on Kali like she just won the house cup. Proud smiles from Camden and Draco, and worried looks from Blaise and Carla, who just got here.
"Holy shit!" Draco exclaimed, his face as happy as a kid on christmas day. "I don't think he'll bother you again. That was overkill."
Kali rubbed her forehead, the emotional turmoil of it all catching up to her. She nodded, feeling proud of herself, even when didn't really do anything. It felt good to see Simon scared, and she felt no remorse like last time, she was sick of it.
Carla gave her a hug, squeezing so tight she thought she might explode, but she liked her best friend's hugs. They were always what she needed. Kali held on tight, even when they were walking out of the store, she kept her grip tight on her friend.
Eventually they seperated because it was hard to walk like that, but they stayed close together. They might have these new friends which have made the perfect addition to their lives, but at the end of the day, they only really needed each other.
Blaise stood behind them, his eyes scanning whoever was around in case Simon or his crew of servants came remotely close to them. Camden was relaying what happened, because Draco would add too much theatrics to the whole story. As Camden talked, he felt his chest explode with a pride he had never felt, just at the thought of Kali standing up for herself. It was also kind of hot.
