Family was a sensitive subject for Kali, mostly because she felt as if her family were coworkers, forced to spend time together. On holiday they came over, but it was all small talk, desperate to fill the silence of people who didn't know each other that well.
Carla's family was the opposite. The closest bunch you will ever meet, and one kind enough to include their daughter's best friend in everything they do. Whether that be vacation or dinner, she was always welcomed.
William, Carla's little brother, sat on the countertop of the blue bathroom, moving his hair around as Kali passed some gel through it. "Will, stay still." She ordered, gripping his hair tight to make him stop.
"I don't understand why you have to do my hair." He complained back, crossing his arms in front of his body. "It's fine the way it is."
"No, you have to gel it right." She corrected, a bit exasperated with the kid.
Recently, he has been on a long hair journey, as he calls it, and his hair is so messy that it is impossible to comb. Since he does everything Kali says due to his little crush on her, she ordered him to shower and wet his hair in order to show him how to make it look good. Carla wanted no part of this, so she's sunbathing outside.
He finally stayed still, rolling his eyes in a sassy manner. William was exactly like his sister, and it worried Kali that he was coming to Hogwarts alone. Kali and Carla were leaving and he was just entering the castle. Since forever, he's wanted to be a Gryffindor, so that's what the whole family is rooting for.
At the end of the day, they are not sure if William is a wizard. His parents are muggles, but Carla's a witch, so he has hope. It would be devastating for him to not be able to go to Hogwarts, so no one mentions that possibility.
"How has school been, Willy?" Kali made conversation, she really missed him. "Any girlfriends?"
Scrunching up his face, he shook his head. "Ew. No girlfriends ever and don't call me Willy. I'm not five anymore."
She laughed, amused by his answer. "My bad, you are now six."
"Stop it." He spoke, sticking his tongue out with fake anger. "Carla told me you have a boyfriend."
Kali's eyes opened wide, shocked that Carms told her little brother part of her drama. "I don't think he's my boyfriend, but yes, I have a suitor."
"Is he cute?" His eyes met hers in the mirror and he was so red, it was adorable.
There was no point in lying, so she nodded harshly. "Very cute." She replied. "And very nice."
"You should have invited him for dinner." William said, shrugging like it was the best idea ever.
Humming, Kali scrunched her eyebrows. "I don't know about that. You can meet him during the summer."
He was about to answer but the very blonde head of Carla popped through the open door. She had a bathing suit on and her cheeks were a bit pink. "Looking good, Willy."
"Thanks." He mumbled, staring at himself in the mirror to examine if Kali did a good job. "We were talking about Kali's boyfriend."
Carla gave him a harsh look and turned to Kali smiling. "We talked about discretion, but he doesn't understand it." Her voice told him off. "The sun is so warm, you need to tan. Your skin is way too pale."
"Well, I'm done with Willy." She looked at the boy who was now standing on the floor. "Let's go."
With that she let her guide her outside, the harsh sun beaming down on her. Her bathing suit was already on. A blue bikini that she has matching with Carla.
The Atkinsons had a blue pool in the backyard, a pretty big one. It was perfect for these warm days if you wanted to get some sun. It wasn't a deep pool, just about five feet, but Kali refrained from going into it. This time, she was ready.
"Let's get in the pool." She said, eyeing the water with more confidence than before.
Carla shook her head, sitting on one of the lounge chairs. "You can't swim well."
"Blaise taught me how to float." She spoke, Carla standing up as she finished saying the words. "That's why I didn't tell you anything about the date. I wanted it to be a surprise."
Carla didn't even answer, she just threw herself into the pool. The huge cannonball making a splash and getting Kali soaked. "I'm waiting."
Kali stood on the steps, taking deep breaths until she was ready to show her new skill. Once she was in the water, she recounted what Blaise told her and executed it perfectly, all while explaining the whole date, leaving no details out.
