Chapter Eighteen

RIKER

"Can you guys please stop?" I shout, exasperate.

For 3 days, Ross and Haily are arguing nonstop. And when I say nonstop it's nonstop. The only moment when I don't hear them yelling at each other is when Ross gives Hailey private lesson to teach her how to aim and shoot. Oddly during these moments they are calm.

"She said she was better than me!"

"So what?" Hailey protests.

"So what, that is mean!"

"It's not mean. It's a fact."

"Please guys, Riker's right..." Ryland groans, as exasperate as me. We are on the living room, come back from patrol for 2 hours already. We're all exhausted. But they still find enough strengh to fight.

"You know what? Let's make a bet." Ross proposes.

Is he serious? Really? I roll my eyes, so does Rydel.

"What type?"

"In 2 weeks, the one who will have killed more Infecteds than the other win. The loser will do all the winner's chores."

Hailey seems to cogitate about Ross'proposition, and finally nods.

"Deal."

"Ryland, you'll be the referee." Ross says.

"What? No I don't want to..."

Ryland stops seeing the glares that Ross and Hailey are giving to him.

"Okay, okay, I'll do it..." He capitulates raising his hands.

"Be ready to get thrashed Ross." Hailey smirks at him.

"I won't lose."

"Of course you will."

"No I won't!"

Here we go again... They kill me.
I get up of the couch sighing and decide to go outside to get some fresh air. I open the door, head for the barrier of the little balcony and lean on it.

It's getting dark little by little and there's fresh air. I take a deep breath and look up at the sky. Some stars are sprinkling already.

Peace. Finally.

But I hear the door quietly closed behind me. I turn around to see Rydel. She gets closer and leans next to me.

"These two wear me out." She smiles.

"Why do you think I went outside?" I chuckle.

"I feel guilty to have left Ryland with them."

"He will survive."

A peaceful silence takes place, and we listen to the sounds of the nature.

"They'll end up together." I say.

"Who?"

"Ross and Hailey."

Rydel stares at me and smiles.

"Impossible."

"Wanna bet?" I wink.

"Don't be silly, they argue all the time."

"Anything is possible."

"If you say so."

New silence. It's getting darker and darker.

"Rydel, since we reunited, you haven't told me what happened for you after, you know..."

She sighs and moves a bit. I can tell she's nervous.

"You don't have to you know..." I reassure her.

"No it's okay, it's just... Anyway, you told me so..."

My sister stands up straight and sighs again.

"You know the beginning. They came, they killed mom and dad, we lost each other... It was difficult for us too. We had to stay 3 nights outside, and Ryland has been nearly killed, so I have. We weren't careful. We were fool enough to let the fire we build burning." She sadly laughs.

"We eventually found this house. A real miracle. Big for two persons, but it was the perfect place. We trained ourselves and helped each other to patrol, just like you. When we were ready we started the patrols. One day we found Hailey. She was wounded so we brought her home and healed her. She hasn't been lucky at all Riker. She lost everything and stayed alone for a month, a month without anyone in this world, do you realize?"

Rydel takes a break and sighs.

"It should have been hard for her. I don't know if I would have carried on without Ross and Rocky. Especially that..."

I stop. I haven't told Rydel about the problem I had with the alcohol for a few months yet.

"Especially what?"

"Nothing... Nothing important. Go on."

"So I was saying Hailey suffered a lot. Well I think, she doesn't talk a lot, even to me. When she was better, we patroled again. We found the electric car, very useful to go to the city. One day Ryland got sick, so we patroled alone to get some medicines. There was a problem so we had to split. Then I heard screams and that was when I saw Ross and Hailey arguing. Weird isn't it?" She laughs.

"I told you, they'll end up together."

"And you arrived." Rydel continues." Then you know. Here was our story."

We sigh at the same time. We're not brother and sister for nothing.

"I missed you a lot little sister." I say wrapping my arm around to get her closer to me and I hug her.

"I missed you too big brother." She hug back.

We stay like that during about 5 minutes, without saying anything. The sounds of the nature are enough for us.
