ROCKY
My training to enter the patrols started a week ago, and finished today. I'm pretty relieved to be honest, it demanded much more work than I expected. I had to wake up early, and finish late at night, when the curfew already began. Davis also demanded from me to catch up with Mrs Hill's lessons at the same time. I would've liked to tell him it was useless, and pretty hypocrite from him as his son never showed up there. My rational side prevented me though, knowing I could lose this place I desperately wanted since I arrived here.
But there's a snag. As my training is over, they assigned my new post: guard on the wall, in the inner patrol. I won't complain, but I was aiming a place at the outside one. Not to sound arrogant, but I was the most suitable for this position. I spent way more time outside than the two others men that were with me. You're too young Lynch, they said, this is for your own safety. Once again, I would've protested, but there was no need to insist. They would have refused, categorically. I suspect Davis from ordering this though. He didn't forget about our first encounter, when I showed how badly I desired to go outside again. He, as for him, made me understand it'll never happen. My hope to seek for my brothers is so minime now, but my stubborn side resists, and doesn't let itself be pushed around. I buttoned it then, and stormed out the door, when nobody was watching, anger boiling inside me.
I need to unleash my frustration on someone, and unluckily for him, I chose Ethan. He's my friend here, he'll understand. Besides, Maddy's certainly busy at the hospital right now. I dart over our dormitory, through the thick dark night covering the camp.
I push the door open, and climb up the stairs, up to the second floor, where his room is. I turn on my left, and slow down, as a curious frown grows on my face. Someone is singing, softly. My suspicions are confirmed, when I approach Ethan's door, that is slightly opened and let through some light in the dark corridor. He is the one humming, accompanied by a guitar.
Double surprise. I didn't know he could play the guitar, or that he could sing, and let me say he's rather good at it. I place myself besides the door, and put my hands on it, to push it open carefully.
"Then I realised what it took, to tell the difference between thieves and crooks, lesson learned to me and you..."
I discreetly pass my head in the door frame. I notice he has not touched all the posters of Green Day he has everywhere on his room.
"Give me something that I need, satisfaction guaranteed, 'cause I'm thinking about a brand new hope, the one I've never known, cause now I know, it's all I wanted..."
It's when he just strums some chords that I decide to show my presence, and I clear my throat. He suddenly stops, flattening the strings, and quickly turns around his head toward me, his grey eyes wide open.
"Damn I nearly had a heart attack!" He half shouts." Are you crazy?"
"Sorry." I chuckle, scratching my neck. He sighs.
"Well, now that you're here, take a seat." He pats the spot next to him on his bed.
"Was it a Green day song?" I ask when I mexecute.
"How do you know?"
"Dude. Your room is filled by posters of them."
"Oh, yeah." He giggles, and turns around, about to settle his black acoustic guitar behind him.
"I have a bad new." I admit, and he frowns at me, stopping his movement. He seems truly concerned, and it reassures me that he cares. I've been lucky to encounter such friends.
