Chapter Fifteen

ROCKY

"Woaw that's so much better now!" Ethan says as I'm finally going out of the hairdresser of the camp. Maddy just smiles. Now at least, I don't look like a savage anymore, people will stop looking at me oddly everytime they will see me... It was kinda annoying actually.

"So, shall we do the visit?" I say. I'm really excited, this camp looks fantastic.

It takes us almost all the afternoon.

Obviously, there's an entrance highly protected. Numerous buildings like the ones in the ordinary cities are set up a little bit everywhere, the Canteen of course, Davis' office, a sport hall and even a swimming pool! I don't really understand the point of having this here though... Anyway, people are divided by family, age or state in four big dormitories of three levels each. Maddy told me she will show me after, I'm looking forward to see my new room. It can't be worse than the bunker.

"So you have two brothers?" Ethan asks me.

Since I'm new, they allowed us to climb in the surrounding walls where the guards keep an eye on the outside world, so I could see the camp from here. We just finished to climb the stairs.

"Yes, Riker and Ross. There are also Rydel and Ryland, but they disappeared when we had been attacked, when our parents had been..."

Butchered, I'm thinking it loud and clear, but the word stays stuck in my throat. Maddy gently puts her hand on my shoulder.

"Woaw, it's a lot of siblings... I am only son."

"How did you end up here guys?"

We decide to sit on the floor to tell our story. Ethan begins.

"Well so like I just said, I didn't have any brothers or sisters, and my family wasn't really big. My mother contracted the virus, but she wasn't an Infected, only contaminated and she just... Died."

This conversation is tough to hear. Unfortunately it's our new world, we must deal with it. But it's tough, really tough.

"When we were only two, my father decided to send me here," Ethan continues," This camp was open for everyone. But the entrance was refused for my father, because he was infected, like mom... So he stayed outside. I still don't know where he is, or what he became." Ethan ends, and lowers his head.

I bite my lips, feeling guilty. Maybe his father became an Infected, and maybe I killed him during one of our patrols... I gently puts my hand on Ethan's shoulder to comfort him. Maddy coughs, embarrased.

"It's my turn I guess... It's, hum... Complicated. The virus developed in our neighborhood. We decided to come here as fast as we could, before the Infection. My little sister died during the trip. Then bandits attacked us on the road. I was the only survivor, and the only to reach our destination."

New silence. But the situation is delicate.

"And how all of this has been built? When? We haven't heard about this camp with my family..." I break the silence.

"Davis made it. He was a military man, I don't remember his rank. We can say he is the boss. The camp was built quickly, at first there were only the big surrounding walls of course, some tents and food. We had to talk about it everywhere, but everything went so fast... We barely open it that the Infection was almost over. Only a few people were arriving every day. Now nothing. When you arrived, it was five months we didn't see a new comer." Maddy explains.
