(The song above has nothing to do with the chapter, I'm just obsessed with it at the moment haha)
RIKER
I can't believe my eyes when we eventually stand in front of their refuge, at the early evening. An immaculate apartment block compared to the ones surrounding it, it has been spared by the ravages of the Disruption. Besides, the area is deserted: no Infected around. They did a really good job with the patrols. I thought Ellington was exaggerating, when he was praising the site between two fights. But I have to admit he had the right to be so proud. I know I personally would be, and I wouldn't need to be asked twice to brag about it.
My siblings, Hailey and I longly stare at the impressive facade as Ellington opens the front door. We follow them inside. Seeing how it looks from outside, I can't wait to see what's next.
I thought it'd be crowded. But according to all the noises echoing among the floors, they are busy upstairs. Anyway, it's been a while I haven't heard so many different voices at the same time, in the same place. Longer than I can remember.
I'm busy looking everywhere, especially the out of order elevator, when someone tap on my shoulder. I turn my head, to see Ratliff nodding at the gun on my hand.
"What?"
"Cough up."
I look around, to notice I'm the only one still equipped. Derek is bringing everyone's else on the room where they stock the weapons I presume.
"Why can't I keep it? It's not like we're going to besiege you." I narrow my eyes, suspicious. I mean, you can't survive in the world without a weapon. It's like your cell phone. Back in the days, you would freak our when you loose it. It's the same with my gun. I just need it, to feel safer. I feel bare-naked without it. Ratliff snorts at my remark.
"Of course you won't. It's just for security, it's the rules. Don't worry though, They can't break in. We're fine here."
I decide to trust him. He's my best friend after all. I hand him my gun, still reluctantly though. He thanks me, and ask Derek to bring us to the "common room" as enter in another flat.
God, I already miss it.
Derek leads us in the presumed room. Surprinsingly it isn't a flat, just a plain room that has been fitted out. My eyes first land on the table at the middle, with chairs around, to eventually notice the end of the room.
"I thought you had more food, and supplies." I frown at the more than half empty shelves.
"We do!" Ellington, that I haven't seen coming back, responds." Everything's in the backpacks over there." My eyes lands on the corners, that I haven't checked yet, to note they're in fact here.
We don't move, afraid to do something stupid, while Ellington paces up and down a little, probably thinking, and Derek sits casually at the table. Ell rubs his hands together, a gesture he's been doing a lot lately.
"So... Are you still with us?"
"I don't see why we won't." Rydel replies. Ellington scratches the back of his neck.
"Well... You could I guess. It's not too late."
"It'd be stupid of us to back up now." Hailey adds.
"When are we going to meet the others?"
Ryland, and his gift to change the subject of conversations in two seconds.
"You will soon, but we need..."
"Oh my God! You guys are back!" A feminin voice cuts Ellington off. We all turn out head toward the door, to see a rather tall girl around Ell's age rushing toward him. The brunette grabs his face once she's with us, and passionately presses her lips on his. She then hugs him tight.
