ELLINGTON

I wake up with a start as I hear a girl scream downstairs. I rub my eyes still half asleep, get up and rush out of the flat I sleep in as fast as I can.

I check the time on my watch as I hurtle down the stairs to the ground floor. 9am. What is going on ? Everyone is usually sleeping at this time. And even if someone is awake, they have to not make a sound and wait for the others. They all know that. I hear suspect noises, like there is a fight in one of the flats.

I swear if anyone is actually fighting...

They all know better than this. I don't get why they would fight though. Everyone get along pretty well.

There's not a sound when I eventually arrive, but I recognise Heather's long black hair and Kyle standing in the door frame of the common room. I immediatly assume the problem is here, so I angrily walk toward them and push them out of the way. Doesn't matter if they send me scandalized looks, they should've stayed quiet if they're not happy with this.

I yell with an angry tone when I see Derek on his knees on the floor, knocked over cans all around him.

"What the hell is happening here Derek? Everyone is still sleeping!"

Derek turn toward me, finally noticing I am here. I frown as I realise he's straddling and pointing his gun at someone. It's a blond guy. I didn't recognise him straightaway, but he did apparently, despite the fact he looks very stunned.

"Ellington?"

It was so low I'm probably the only one who heard him. I frown even more as I realise this weak and hoarse voice sounds familiar to me. I walk foward a bit, just to be sure. I would've never expect to see him ever again.

But here Ross is, laying on the floor. He looks exhausted with these rings under his eyes, and he has sunburns all over his arms.
I think it was him, but even if I am a bit far, I see there is something else wrong. He's not himself.

Ross is about to talk, I can tell when I see him open his mouth, but Derek speaks up before.

"What do I do with him Ratliff?"

I just shake my head in disbelief. It's still hard for me to realise one of my best friend is in this room with us. Even if he may not be the one I knew. Derek gets impatients, waiting for my answers that isn't coming. I can even feel Heather and Kyle's looks behind my back. Derek puts correctly the gun in his hands as he aims at Ross' face again.

"Should I kill him? It's kind of the only solution to be sure." Derek says in a monotone tone, as it's normal to kill people like that.

I see Ross' body tense after Derek's remark, and he squirms under him as he starts pulling himself together. Derek firmly press him onto the floor with a hand on his chest, and he eventually stays still.

Ross turns his head and I quiver, when he stares at me with this light blue eyes that are supposed to be brown. They're filled with despair, and another emotion that surprise me. Fear. We know each other, he's not supposed to be frightened. I even notice his hand start shaking a little.

I can't do this. Not now in any case.

"Don't shoot, just knock him down."

"What?" Derek protests." But..."

"Do what I said!"

I hear Ross weakly pronouce my name once again before Derek's gun hits his temple. I slightly jump at the crack sound. Ross' muscles suddenly all relax after the hit, and his breath has a normal pace again. I can't believe I order someone to do it to him.
