RIKER

Everything began last year. An unknown disease. No remedy. And poof! Half of the Earth's population died because of the virus, and the other half got Infected, turning into bloodthirsty creatures. Looking like humans, light blue eyes and pale but only have one thing in their mind. Killing, and often biting their victims. I always found this weird. Infecteds don't feed themselves with human flesh, like the usual zombies you have on movies do.They only want us dead, and bite us so we can turn as well.
For a month, the government managed to contain the problem, having patrols killing the potential Infecteds running the streets, trying to create medicines for the sick people, and burning all the corpses infected, so the virus won't spread.
It wasn't enough.
Nobody knew what happened, but one day, they got numerous, and it's been impossible to stop the wave.
There were riots already all across the country, and fights for food, medicines, weapons. It was the last straw.
Now, almost everyone died. I say almost because I'm still hoping we are not the only one who survived on California or in the USA. Or even on Earth.
Our parents are dead, the day everything turns badly. Dad died in front of my eyes, and this scene haunts me most of the nigh in my dreams. We don't know where Rydel and Ryland are either, our sister and our younger brother. We lost them when we ran away. I hoped at first, but I soon gave up. They are probably dead as well, like everyone. Same for our best friend, Ellington. No phones or internet to get news anymore so...
I stop when I recognise the sign of the police station of West Los Angeles right next to us. Rocky and Ross stops by my sides. We quickly glance at each other, without making a sound, and move toward the door. Rocky and I take our guns as Ross bang at the double wing door loudly, and he keeps his ears open, carefully putting his hand on his knife. We wait a few seconds, to hear potential Infecteds that could be in there. We always does it before coming into a building, in order to minimize the risk. Of course, it doesn't work for every Infecteds, but at least if they're too numerous we hear them before going in, and we can run away.
As no sound reaches us, we come in, still raising our respective weapons in front of us. We check every room as we progress into the corridors, until we found what we are looking for. We eventually find it after we climbed up the stairs.
The room where the guns are is pretty big. The few chairs  here are knocked over, like everyone went out quickly or fought. A lot of things are scattered on the ground, litter and what we came for, munitions.
"Remind me why we didn't come here before?" Rocky sighs as he puts his backpack on the table and opens it.
"Did you know there was a police station there?"
"No."
"Well, me neither. Come on guys, let's pick up everything we can and get out of here."
And that's what we do. We search for munitions on the ground and each drawers on the room, before putting in Rocky's opened bag.
"Hey, they usually have the weapon where they keep the munitions, we should check if there's still some." Ross suggests as he wipes the sweat on his forehead with the palm of his hand.
"I thought knives were better than guns." Rocky sniggers at him playfully.
"Knives are better, but guns can be very useful sometimes." Ross shrugs.
"Ross's right." I intervene before Rocky can comment. I know if he does, they're going to argue again. It always happen." Why haven't we seen them already?"
"Well, maybe there's nothing left." Rocky says. I inspect the room, looking at every wall and corner, when something gets my attention. My fingertips brushed against what seems to be a grid, behind a closet.
"Hey, guys, I think I found it." I say proudly." Help me pushing it!"
After a few seconds, the closet is on the floor.
There are guns behind it, as I expected. Most of them are gone, you can tell by all the empty spaces, but there are still 5 of them.
"Someone probably came here before us." Ross states." They left some just in case they'd come back, and hid them."
"So selfish." Rocky comments as he tries to take the grid of, and he manages to do it. He throws it away and grab the guns, that looks bigger than ours.
"Come on, you would have done the same. We're ready to do anything to survive."
"Who cares now? They probably died, that's why there are still munitions and guns. They never came back." Ross rolls his eyes at Rocky's remark. He knows our brother is probably right.
We put our finds in our backpack, and count how many munitions we got before closing them once for all.
"Should we check all the building?" Ross asks me as he puts his bag over his shoulders. I check my watch.
"We should go." I decide after thinking for a while. Ross only nods as an answer. My brothers come out of the room with their weapon within easy reach, and we go out of the building. We've been lucky. The police station was empty surprisingly, we haven't bumped into any Infecteds. It doesn't happen everyday.
I blink a several times when we're eventually outside, my eyes getting used to the sun. I take the map out of my pocket, unfold it and put it on the bonnet of the police car in front of us. I lean in with my hands at each side of the dirty map.
"Sooo... We're here, at Butler avenue, and we must go back here." I point at the Overland avenue.
"Damn I'm so lazy to walk..." Ross complains casually leaning against the car." I wish we had a car."
"Pretty much all the cars are broken, you know that". Rocky intervenes.
"And, we better keep the few of petrol we found for our generator remember?" I raise an eyebrow at Ross. The latter roll his eyes
"I'm not stupid guys. I just said I'm lazy to walk. Chill."
"It's not that far anyway. If we're careful and quiet, we won't see any."
Ross and Rocky laughs a little at my remark, surprisingly. I glare at them while I fold the map and put it back on my pocket.
"What's so funny?" I say starting to walk.
"You know how much as we do that even if we're careful, we're gonna meet some anyway." Ross smiles at me like an idiot, along with Rocky.
I roll my eyes, but deep inside, I know they're right.
