My foot slipped on the first step, and suddenly, everything shifted. I watched in agonizing detail as the ground disappeared beneath me. It felt as though I had been cast into a freefall from the heavens, the air rushing past my face in a desperate, silent scream. The world around me slowed down, as if time itself had decided to stretch its limits.
The wooden steps became a blur, and my body felt weightless, suspended in this surreal descent. Panic set in, and my heart pounded, a thunderous drumbeat in my chest. The walls of the stairwell seemed to stretch and contort, like a never-ending tunnel leading to an unknown abyss.
As I tumbled downward, every thought and emotion raced through my mind. Fear, regret, and the hope of survival all merged into a chaotic whirlwind. Time, which had once slowed to a crawl, now seemed to accelerate, hurtling me towards the inevitable collision with the unforgiving ground.
Finally, with a bone-jarring impact, I crashed onto the landing below, my body echoing with pain. The world, which had been so unhurried and dramatic moments ago, snapped back to reality, leaving me gasping for breath and overwhelmed by the surreal sensation of falling through the sky.
Shafts of dappled sunlight pierced through the thick canopy of ancient trees that lined the path, creating a play of shadows and light, like whispers from the past.
I blinked, sitting up quickly... Sunlight?
Looking around, I narrowed my eyes. Clearly I'd died because this was definitely not the DMV anymore. Also, what kind of idiot dies on the stairs at the DMV?
The steps, meticulously carved from weathered gray stone, held the weight of centuries in their undulating surface. Smoothed by footsteps, they seemed to tell tales of devotion and perseverance. The stone steps were accented by beautiful red torii gates that lead upward further than I could see.
I stood up and brushed off my clothes, somehow feeling alright. In fact, I actually felt great. I hadn't felt this great in years! Looking down at my body I narrowed my eyes again. Seemed alright? Nothing broken, if not a bit younger looking in a way? Maybe I really did die?
"Alright." I said aloud, "Well fuck it." I sighed, starting the long trek up the stairs.
As I climbed the stairs I pondered my situation, feeling calm somehow. What was the point in freaking out anyway? I was already dead right? Or maybe in a coma? No, this was fine. Nothing I can do about it right? No sense worrying about it. Right?! Oh god I was panicking.
I was running up the stairs before I finally spotted two people ahead of me. They wore black uniforms that practically matched with high collars like Japanese school boys, except one of them had those wide bottoms genie looking pants. You know the ones.
I stopped in my tracks immediately.
There was no way.
I stared at them, before the white haired boy turned around and my eyes widened in shock.
"No fucking way..."
"Who the hell are you?" Satoru Gojo said with a raised eyebrow from behind his signature round sunglasses.
It would have been cool if I could have said something like a normal person. Something neat, like in a movie or whatever, but instead I just looked at him and laughed awkwardly.
Suguru Geto, the other boy, turned and furrowed his brow. He looked me over and then back at Gojo, "Maybe she's another student in our class?" He leaned down and peered at me, "Who are you?"
"Uhhh..." I blinked, finding my voice again, "Sarah. I'm... I'm Sarah."
"Sarah?" Gojo said incredulously, tilting his head, "What are you doing here?"
