April 2016
In a sun-kissed backyard, a sandy blond-haired toddler giggled with unbridled joy as she darted through the lush green grass. Wearing a vibrant blue Yukata adorned with delicate blue fireflies, her laughter harmonized with the gentle rustle of leaves overhead.
The bright stitching on her Yukata seemed to come alive, mimicking the dance of real fireflies that flickered in the twilight. As she ran, tiny hands outstretched, the evening sun cast a golden glow on her carefree silhouette, creating a whimsical scene of innocence.
The air echoed with the melody of her laughter, as if the very atmosphere joined in the celebration of childhood. With each dash, the fireflies on her Yukata twinkled in tandem, adding a magical touch to her playful escapade. She reached down to touch the cool blades of grass, her fingers momentarily glistening with droplets of dew.
Jumping into the air, her feet crackled with a bright purple lighting. With light popping steps, she bounced into the air and across the empty space of the sky. Her hair fluttered in the wind and she smiled so brightly with her arms outstretched like an airplane.
“Akie!!” Satoru called to her with a matching smile, standing on the air himself, “C’mon! You can do it, princess!”
Akie cackled, the energy on her feet flaring as she bounded up into his arms. With a bright airy laugh he spun her around, the two of them dancing in the infinite space only they could share.
I sat watching them, sitting on the back porch with Tsumiki and Megumi as the two of them played. Those of us stuck on the ground, enjoyed some strawberries out of a bowl as we awaited the fireworks show from the spring festival under the canvas of that velvety spring night. From our backyard we had such a perfect view, it had become a yearly thing for us.
Tsumiki, nestled between Megumi and I. Her eyes sparkled with a mix of excitement and wonder. Megumi fidgeted with his phone ready to capture the fleeting bursts of color that would soon adorn the sky. Meanwhile, Akie, the youngest of the clan, cackled with infectious glee in Satoru's arms as the two of them touched down again to sit with us.
As the first firework soared into the night, a collective gasp escaped. The brilliant display painted the darkness with vivid hues, mirrored in the awe-struck expressions of each family member. Satoru still gently held Akie in his arms, ensuring the little one felt both secure and enchanted by the dazzling show.
Satoru couldn't help but steal glances at us, finding joy in our shared delight. Tsumiki and Megumi exchanged whispered exclamations. Akie clapped her little hands, the lights sparkling in her wide eyes.
As the final firework blossomed into a shower of sparks, we sat in the glow of the aftermath. The night lingered with the echoes of laughter, the scent of spring, and the warmth of a family bound by the magic of a simple yet extraordinary night under the stars.
Heading back inside, Akie slowly fading in Satoru's arms, I picked up the empty bowl from our strawberries and took it into the kitchen. The house was quiet as I said my goodnights to Tsumiki and Megumi before they left to get ready for bed. Upstairs, Satoru had placed Akie in her bed and met me in the hall.
He embraced me tightly, leaning down to touch his forehead against mine. His eyes closed gently, a tender smile gracing his face, as I wrapped my arms around his neck. With a soft chuckle, he effortlessly lifted me up in his embrace.
“You have no idea how happy I am right now.” He whispered, looking up at me, “Do you even know?”
I smiled at him and whispered back, “I think maybe I have an idea.”
“You are everything I've ever needed.” He said softly, his eyes glittering, “Nothing can tear you away from me. I won't let it.”
Releasing his grip I slid down, he let my feet touch the ground and kissed me softly. Linking his pinky with mine as our lips parted, he guided me to our bathroom while we got ready for bed ourselves. He stayed close, might as well have been physically attached, his arms or hands always touching me in some way.
