The very next morning, after a very tearful reunion with Akie and the twins that night, I headed to the school to talk to Tsukumo. It was my first chance to talk to her and I'd always regretted not being able to see her when she talked to Suguru. At the time, I didn't know how to reverse and it was difficult to catch her. Plus, there was always something going on that kept me from seeking her out.

Satoru had the boys and Akie, all four of them dressed in warm coats and scarfs. There had been a very light snow that night so the ground had just enough powerdery whiteness that the boys were fascinated. Akie was all too pleased to show them the snow and how cold it was. Their little eyes were glowing brightly, Satoru's too, as they all were picking up handfuls and looking at what I can only assume was the individual flakes?

I spilt off from them to go to the close sitting room. There was a nice room near the door that had a good view of the courtyard. It was always my favorite spot to go, especially when I had to meet with someone.

“So,” Tsukumo asked, crossing one of her legs over the other, “Normally I ask people what their type is when I first meet them.” She grinned, jutting her chin out towards Satoru who was now running around in the courtyard with Akie and the twins, “But I think I might already know.”

I shrugged before I sat down across from her, “I like them overconfident, flirty and fun,” I smirked, “And if they really just need a good hug under all that, that helps too.”

She laughed, “Well, guess you lucked out.” Then she leaned forward, “Or did you? Are you sure you didn't just come to this world because you wanted to?”

I shrugged again, “Well, Isekai is a pretty popular style of anime in my world,” I tilted my head, “Probably here now too these days. It's around the same timeline. It's not like I hadn't wished for it before, but I can't say I intentionally came here.”

“I don't get it.” She huffed, sitting up straight again and laying her arms across the back of the chair, “Our buddy Kenny told you that cursed energy brought you here, right? But why you?”

“I'm not sure. Maybe it was just a chance thing?” I looked at my hands, “But either way it was me that was brought here and I'll be the one to make sure everything works in the end.”

“Ugh.” She groaned, “This is so annoying. I just wish this curse energy stuff made sense for once.”

“Yeah. This whole situation is weird.” I sighed, “Apparently, Kenjaku just wants me to fight the whole story too. I'm not sure what he thinks will happen when I do though or how I can do it. I'm not like you special grades. I can't make big explosions or anything. All my damage comes from my dagger.”

“Well, I'm sure it's just something only you can do.” She said, pointing lazily over towards me, “A lot of this stuff seems to revolve around you even being here.” She sat up, “So, I did want to talk to you about something though. Something I think you're unaware of.”

She steepled her fingers, “Did you know that the story essentially pauses for those who aren't directly involved yet?”

I gasped, “What?!”

“Yeah.” She nodded, “Since I apparently show up early in the story as an important character, I was still active. But I did some investigating.” She looked up at me, “Some of the others who will show up in the culling game are essentially frozen in time until they'll be needed.”

I put my hand over my mouth, feeling oddly guilty. So the world really was just catering to the story and where I currently was in it. It was no different than Ryūgyū, only a façade to keep the characters going. Was it just for my benefit?
