“You sure you're okay to do this?” Satoru asked for at least the five hundredth time since we left the hotel, catching me as I jumped down from the tall rickety gates. The section of the market we needed to go to was closed off for now, so we'd had to get creative. And by creative I mean we just climbed over.
“I'm fine. You weren’t worried like a half hour ago.” I sighed, “Relax. If I really am pregnant it's only like four or five weeks. Heartbeats start like hella early.”
“Oh?” He set me down, following behind as I walked ahead, “How do you know? It's not an if by the way.”
“Because I've had a baby before.” I said, pulling up my hood, and looking ahead.
“... In your previous life?” He asked quietly.
“Yeah. A little boy.” I said, a half-smile tugging at my lips, “He is wonderful. Just like his Daddy. I'm sure he's around seventeen by now if time is the same out there.”
“How old was he when you died?” He asked softly, I could hear him shifting a little awkwardly as he walked behind me.
“He… he was three.” I whispered, biting back tears, “Let's not talk about that, okay? I've already mourned my previous life.”
“How did you not know you were pregnant then?” He tilted his head, “Isn't it the same?”
“The first time I didn't really notice at first either, honestly.” I shrugged, turning the corner into the alley, “Just my tits hurt and stuff a few days before I missed my period. I didn't have sickness or anything.”
“Huh.” He looked completely lost, looking me over again, “Well. Uh…”
I rolled my eyes, “Don't worry about it right now. Let's just focus on getting this done. I don't want to think about it.”
He definitely still wanted to talk about it. I could see his eyes still staring at me every time I caught a look at him, they looked so bright. Hell, I wanted to talk about it too.
“Satoru.” I said softly, stopping and looking up at him.
“Hmm?” He looked down, trying to mask his giddy smile.
Satoru was practically vibrating with excitement beside me, though he tried to keep his thoughts to himself for the most part. I didn't want to spoil the mood for him, but I just didn't know what to do. He was so happy. I didn't think something like this would make him so happy.
“Satoru.” I said again, “I'm really scared.”
His smile fell and he stepped closer, hovering over me and holding me close. “Hey it's gonna be alright. I know I’m getting really excited but… it's… it's really up to you whatever you want to do.”
I shook my head, “No I really can't go through with what you're thinking. Not that I'm against it but I just… I can't do that after I've been through it before.” I reached my hand up to the back of his neck, my fingers tangling in his hair, “I’m just afraid that this child may have to go through life without us. What if something happens?”
“We won't let anything happen.” He whispered, letting his head fall down against my collar, “It's alright. We can make sure of it. We can do this. There's no one else who has more power in this situation than us!”
“You're always so sure it's going to be okay.” I sighed, “I wish I was as confident. I feel like I used to be.”
“Well, let me have the confidence for both of us then.” He grinned, “I'm already cocky enough for at least three people.”
