Running my fingers through my hair anxiously, I couldn't help but be surprised once again by how short it had become. Sarah had insisted on the wolf cut, showing me a photo and practically dragging me to a salon. It's not that I didn't like the new look, but it was such a drastic change. I felt strangely exposed without my long hair.
The bigger problem, however, was that Satoru had discovered my desire to start dating again. Sarah had managed to coax it out of me, and now Satoru knew. He was constantly bombarding me with photos of women he knew or could connect with.
I appreciated his efforts, but it had become quite tiresome. Especially when he didn't truly understand my preferences. Most of the time, he only seemed to remember what I liked back in high school, which had changed significantly since then. Additionally, I would have preferred to be with another Sorcerer, which unfortunately limited my options significantly.
After experiencing three unsuccessful dates, I had requested both individuals to give me some space. Sarah's proposal had been slightly more promising, but regrettably, she had discovered my past and became cautious around me. I understood her hesitation, as I was not entirely blameless. It almost seemed futile to pursue a connection with someone who was unaware of my previous actions.
As I settled into my seat on the train, I decided to indulge in one of my hard candies. Having just completed another simple mission, where I had successfully absorbed four grade two curses, I still had a surplus of them. However, I had no intention of using them to cause harm in Tokyo or Kyoto. Instead, I intended to save them for when the Shibuya incident unfolded.
Currently, Sarah was determined to prevent any deaths in Shibuya including non-sorcerer, while Satoru had a different strategy in mind. Sarah aimed to get ahead of the chaos and put a stop to the entire event, whereas Satoru believed in allowing it to commence and letting Kenjaku initiate the culling game as planned. Both of them had valid arguments - Sarah wanted to avoid unnecessary loss of life, while Satoru understood the magnitude of the challenge we were about to face and the benefit of knowing what was to come.
Clenching the round candy between my teeth, my mind wandered that subject again. I leaned more towards agreeing with Satoru in this scenario, being that if we knew what to expect we can prepare easier. Sarah's idea was surely the more noble approach, but as hard as I'd worked to be forgiven for my crimes I still had a distaste for non-sorcerers. I'd never admit that to anyone of course, but It was still something I struggled with.
I knew my actions were wrong, that was certainly true, but like someone who'd been bitten by a dog I still felt wary. Perhaps wary wasn't the word, but more unappreciated and disgusted. Even though one of my dearest friends was previously a non-sorcerer in her own world, I just couldn't easily shake my true feelings.
As I gazed down at my uniform, I delicately toyed with the brass button adorning the collar. My commitment to refrain from causing harm to any non-sorcerers was not merely a means to avoid punishment; it was a genuine desire for a complete transformation. I yearned to embody the person I aspired to be during my high school years.
Glancing out of the window into the rainy night, I observed the swiftly passing cityscape as the train raced ahead. Satoru had managed to undergo such a profound metamorphosis, evolving from a mischievous affluent youth with an inflated ego to a man who, although still prone to mischief, possessed a newfound sentimentality and thoughtfulness. It was a remarkable transformation from what he could have become, and I too longed for such a profound change.
To my astonishment, Mimiko and Nanako were waiting for me as the train arrived at my stop. My daughters approached me with radiant smiles, dressed in their school uniforms, clearly delighted to see me. It was pleasant to know that next year, they would also be attending JJT alongside Megumi and two other students whom I had yet to meet. This marked a significant change in their lives from the story, one that would undoubtedly secure their well-being.
