Chapter 60:

Itadori's POV

'Nanami... Take them with you, go as far as you can from the subway,' Are we supposed to just ignore the tears threatening to spill from her eyes when she sent us away? I look beside me to find Megumi's expression completely choleric as he stares at the floor. Ever so often I fear him as his breathing becomes deep and shallow, as if the air around him isn't enough. Nobara isn't in a better state; I have never seen her eyes so widened, her fist is clenched around the nails she took out the moment Y/n stepped into the wagon.

There is nothing in my mind besides anger.

Are we really that useless?

I look up and see Nanami walking in front of us, his back turned to us.

Maybe I am an idiot. Maybe I am completely useless, and I'll become nothing but a nuisance for her. But maybe, just maybe, I can do something to help her. And even if the possibility is thin, or almost non-existent, I can't ignore that small chance where I can be useful. I want to help as many people as I possibly can, so why wouldn't that include her? My feet start to slow down as I try me best to make it as silent as I can.

I'm sorry, Nanami. I promise I'll try to come back to apologize.

I can see my two classmates turn towards me as I hope they understand the reasoning behind my decision. I stop and turn before doing what what I can do best: I run, ignoring the screams calling my name as I sprint through the subway halls. The wind resistence making my hearing muffled, I speed up as I sense them getting closer. I don't look back until I hear footsteps behind me. I glance back to find Megumi and Nobara.

The moment our eyes meet: I understand they aren't trying to stop me.

I want to smile, but I'll only be able to be grateful for them after we loose Nanami. He calls for us as we reach a corner, but he's far away enough. I begin to slow down, the sound of our shoes clashing againt the floor the only sound around us. I signal them to change directions, betting everything on our headstart and velocity. We all hold our breath as his footsteps approach us. I can hear my heartbeat in my ears as I stop Megumi from peeking. All of us completely still. Waiting, listening for Nanami's decision. Eventually, his footsteps decide to go the opposite way.

I'm sorry, Mr. Nanami.

"Idiot, he went towards Y/n," Nobara whispers.

"We can take another route through the tunnels." I say trying to catch my breath.

"We should find her and evaluate the situation, only help if they need us," Megumi summons the dogs from the ground. "Find a route to Y/n," he instructs as we begin to follow the dogs.

"Didn't Mr. Gojo kill the elders? They were the ones who could command her, right?" I ask as we sprint as silently as we can through the railroads.

"Well, he clearly missed one," Nobara says as she brings her hammer out.

We get closer until the dog eventually bumps into a wall.

"Shit..." Megumi runs closer, his hand comes up as he approaches before it gets stuck. "There is a veil."
