DUSK ~Peeta Mellark~

Dead Soon

I walked next to Finnick while he taught Peeta a speech he'd have to make for a propo. "You got it." Finnick said when Peeta repeated it back to him. We kept walking behind Katniss and Gale.

Finnick and I had pretty much become Peeta's caregivers. We always stayed by him even when it wasn't our watch. He also seemed more comfortable with it.

"Boggs. This is a good spot" Cressida spoke making her way through all of us. "Through there in the courtyard." "Ok let us clear it." Boggs walked ahead of us holding the holo in front of him to make sure there were no pods.

The holo started beeping when we got to two walls. We all split to take cover. I noticed Finnick with Peeta so i figured it would be fine if I went on the other side. I crouched down with everyone else as Boggs threw something between the walls causing two large guns to appear from the walls and rapidly shoot everything around.

I dropped my trident, covered my ears with my hands, and shut my eyes tightly. After a few seconds the gunfire stopped, and Boggs stood from his spot.

"All clear. Gale, Homes, with me. Leegs take the wings." I stood up and looked over past Katniss. Peeta was muttering to himself. He looked on the verge of tears as he started lightly hitting his head against his gun.

I was going to quickly run over to try to calm him down but an explosion followed by a scream stopped me. Katniss ran as quickly as she could in the heavy protection we were wearing. Boggs' legs were blown off completely.

One of the Leegs had also been injured in the explosion and she was screaming in pain. The other Leeg sister noticed and ran but she stepped on a pressure plate.

The walls closed us in and we all ran as a black goo chased behind us. I ran beside Finnick as everyone shouted at each other. When Finnick paused and turned around i stopped in my tracks. Finnick ran to Peeta who had just pushed Mitchell into the goo triggering a net made of barbed wire.

Finnick pulled Peeta with him as he started running again. I waited for them and ran with them when they got close enough. Soldiers yelled for everyone to gather in a building that they made accessible by shooting the glass on the door.

We ran up the stairs as the goo started to fill the building but at a certain point the stairs cut off. We were stuck. Finnick injected Peeta with a sedative causing him to fall to the floor. The goo reached the last step before stopping and lowering.

"We better move." Finnick spoke. "If peacekeepers didn't know where we were they do now." "Those surveillance cameras caught us." Castor said. Jackson tried to get in contact with base through the radio.

"This is a bad spot. We need to move now." "I can't get a signal. But I can get us back to base. Everdeen, give me the holo." Katniss didn't answer. "Everdeen what did i just say? The holo come on let's go." "Boggs gave it to me." "What are you talking about?" "He did. He transferred security clearance to her. I saw him."

"And why would he do that?" "I'm no special orders from Coin." "To do what?" "To assassinate President Snow." That caught me off guard. I hadn't heard anything about that. "I don't believe that for one second. As your new unit commander, i order you to transfer security clearance to me now." "I can't do that."

Jackson pulled out her gun and gale raised his crossbow. Everyone followed their actions, lifting their weapons. Everyone except for Finnick and i who were still next to Peeta. "I'm not asking you again Everdeen. Give me that holo."

"She's telling the truth." Cressida stepped between Katniss and Jackson. "Plutarch wants it televised. He thinks if we could film the Mockingjay assassinating Snow, it'll make the capitol surrender before the casualties get too high."

"While we're arguing, there's 100 peacekeepers on their way here." Gale spoke. Katniss pushed his crossbow down and stood in front of him. "Boggs promised me that when the time came, you would help me." She said.

Jackson stood for a second before lowering her gun. "Alright soldier. Holo's yours." Finnick and I focused our attention on Peeta who was starting to wake back up. We ignored everyone around us as we made sure Peeta wouldn't freak out when he was back to it.

When Jackson told everyone to move out Finnick and I Pulled Peeta to his feet. The Leeg sisters stayed behind as we all made our way down the stairs. We went outside and all the walls were covered in dried up goo.

I walked on the left side of Peeta and Finnick walked on his right. I could tell Peeta was avoiding eye contact with us. I put my hand on his shoulder for reassurance.

We got into a different building and went up the stairs that led to an apartment. We quickly got the curtains closed and I watched through a tiny crack in them as peacekeepers pulled up. The Leegs started shooting at them and the peacekeepers did the same. Suddenly the Leeg's gunfire stopped, and a peacekeeper made one last shot that sent the building crumbling.

I closed the curtains I was looking through and quickly sat beside Peeta on another set of stairs. The TV in the middle of the room played the anthem and that idiot Caesar Flickerman came on.

"Good afternoon. I'm Caesar Flickerman. Here with our continuing coverage of the defense of the capitol. Today as our peacekeepers valiantly hold off the rebels our story takes a surprising twist. Katniss Everdeen, our once favorite daughter, has infiltrated the city with some of the victors, whose names are all too familiar. Finnick Odair, Kora Banks, and Peeta Mellark. Clearly some alliances don't last forever."

I stood up and walked out of the room and into the kitchen. There I proceeded to dig through the cabinets and look for any edible capitol food. When I couldn't find anything, I went back out just as Caesar's face left the screen.

"So now that we're dead what are we gonna do?" Gale questioned. "Isn't it obvious?" Peeta said quickly. "The next move is to kill me. I killed one of our squad members. Katniss is right. I'm a mutt. And it's only a matter of time before i snap again. I'm not in control. I need a nightlock pill so i can die when I need to."

"If it gets to that point, I'll kill you myself." Gale spoke up. He stood up and left the room. I sat next to Peeta again. I stayed silent so I could think. Peeta thinks he's a mutt, Gale wants him dead, Panem thinks all of us are dead, and we probably will be dead soon. What has the world come to? I shouldn't have come. If I hadn't maybe I could have convinced Coin to let Peeta stay back in 13 for more healing time.
