My eyes flicker open, my body screaming from the pain. My eyes don't want to be open. My body is using all the energy it has left to even be awake.
I try and will my arms to move, my legs too but nothing happens. I'm stuck in place. A prisoner to even my own body.
I can barely even think straight.
"Maliah?" I hear a familiar, soft voice call. My eyes immediately flick around the room.
"Niko?" My ichy, dry voice says. "What are you doing here?" I ask when I lay my eyes upon him.
"Just thought you could use some company."
"Can you let me out of these restraints?" I ask him, the voice I've become accustomed to my whole life is now unrecognisable.
"No can do." Niko says, leaning against the wall.
"I don't feel good." I state, my eyes fighting to stay open.
"I know, that's why I'm here."
"I don't understand."
"It's going to be ok, I'll make sure of it." He promises.
"Are you working with them?" I ask as he seems too calm to be here on a rescue mission.
"You really think I would work with those scum?" He asks, offended by the question.
I look down at my restraints. "Then help me." I tell him. My eyes flick shut for just a moment but when I reopen them, he is gone. "Niko?"
"Niko?" The man from earlier asks as be walks in the room. "You really think Nikolai is going to save you? He despises you. He wouldn't look for you if you were his only chance of survival."
But he was just here....
Realisation dawns on me.
He wasn't real.
He was a hallucination, probably a side effect from whatever drugs I've been given to keep my powers subdued.
"If the only person you think can help you is Nikolai, you're screwed. He's not coming."
After everything I've done, of course he's not coming.
He doesn't even know where I am or even that I'm missing.
Liam is on their payroll and nobody else knows.
Would they even care?
