In the workshop, Tony was trying to find a way to stay alive.

"Check palladium levels." said Tony.

He used the same machine that he used at the Stark Expo.

"Blood toxicity, 24%. It appears that the continued use of the Iron Man suit is accelerating your condition. Another core has been depleted." said JARVIS.

Tony takes the arc reactor out of his chest. The core pops out, it's smoking.

"God, they're running out quick." Tony comments.

"I have run simulations on every known element, and none can serve as a viable replacement for the palladium core." said JARVIS.

Tony inputs a new core. It's silver, giving a judgment of just how badly damaged the other one was. Replaces Arc Reactor in chest.

"You are running out of both time and options. Unfortunately, the device that's keeping you alive is also killing you." said JARVIS.

Which we can see from the image of Tony's chest on the computer screen. There's blue lines all around the Arc Reactor.

"Ms. Cohen and Ms. Potts are approaching. I recommend that you inform them-" JARVIS was saying.

"Mute." Tony interrupts.

Shirt back down, computers switched to screen saver, Pepper inputs a code and opens the door, letting Aaliyah in first before following.

Besides the pain of the Palladium killing him, he was also being eaten alive by the guilt of not being able to tell Aaliyah his best friend, he was the godfather of her daughter and would probably be the only father Abigail knew but she wouldn't even grow up with Abigail would have no father.

He couldn't let Aaliyah know that he was dying, being killed by the thing keeping him alive.

Tony couldn't die letting her think there was something she could've done, when currently there were no options for a cure. Tony needed to make his death as painless as possible for Aaliyah, even if afterwards she would hate him for it. But if that's what he had to do, then he'd do it, even if it would leave Aaliyah scarred for the rest of her life.

Of course he didn't know that Aaliyah already knew he was dying, and this is why people shouldn't leave things on the kitchen bench.

"Is this a joke? What are you thinking?" Pepper asked.

Aaliyah looked confused and eyed Tony suspiciously, knowing it probably had something to do with him.
